Anderson Silva is the latest MMA fighter who will try his hand at acting.
The Brazilian UFC middleweight champion will star in a police movie with his friend Steven Seagal. Seagal is a mixed martial arts instructor who turned into a notable action movie actor. Seagal has actually helped train Silva in past fights.
According to Fighters Only, Silva revealed to Estadao that he received the first draft of the script this week. The movie is supposed to be an action-packed police story.
“I will make a lot of fight scenes and this is also the first time I will act,” Silva tells Estadão (per Fighters Only). “I received a long plot and I will have the opportunity of putting in practice what I have been studying for some time.”
Silva, who beat Stephan Bonnar in October to improve to 33-4, sounds pretty serious about performing well as an actor.
“I don’t want to be seen as somebody who caught the role because I am on the media and to be a fighter. Of course it is difficult, I am not Lorenzo Lamas, but I want to do it well done to the people see that I am a good actor.”
Silva reportedly will begin filming in the US in December.
Randy Couture, Rampage Jackson, Cung Le, and Gina Carano are among the MMA fighters who have gotten into acting. Even Ronda Rousey has said she would beinterested in a movie career. It seems like the two just go together.
With Silva’s impressive speed and fighting skills, one has to imagine the action in the movie will be great. His acting may be another story.

Yeah. Its great he has so many movie project he wants to do, but I have to be hornest and say: *if he dosnt loose alot of weight for his next movies, then my Seagal fan days are over and done with.* I really cant stand looking at him any longer when he is so big/fat/chubby or whatever you wanna call it. Its so sad!!

Just look at how great he looked in Exit Wounds. If he could get back to that form and keep it, it would be great!

You are right. I have just the same feeling about the whole situation. Even the look in Out of Reach was ok.

I still think he looks to big in Out Of Reach, I dont want to settle for anything in btween when I know he can go all the way and loose weight. Either he does it or he dont. We pay to watch, therefore we shouldalso be satified with what we see for the next 90 minutes. And until he looses weight, I'm not gonna watch his movies. I'll watch the trailers to see if he has lost weight, and if he hasent I'll boycut the movie. Thats my decision from now on.

Although i agree with the need of Seagal losing weight, don't judge the movie based just on his size in a trailer. It could be a part where his size fits the character (f.e. Machete and Pistol Whipped).

But in general he needs to take an example to Schwarzenegger, he is training again, looking more and more in great shape again and still insisting on doing his own fights and stunts. Deep respect for Arnie.

Peace

A support role would be better. So either a Seagal teammember or a bad guy henchmen.

Don't think a main character role would be a very good idea for a first time.

Machete was the only movie where his weigh dident bother me at all, but there has been alot of movies where his weight dident fit his characters at all, and that seems like a bad excues from him for not wanting to loose weight. Anyway my opinion hasent changed.

I compltely understand you .. Its very simple, he just have to loose weight or kiss his career goodbye in the long run of things..

I agree. It's the only thing holding him back. I think that if he was in shape he would get theatrical movies. The "in thing" now is the old school action stars making comebacks, I.e. Stallone, arnie etc. I'd say Seagal could easily land under siege 3 if he was in stallones shape but what studio will invest 60 million dollars in an overweight action hero ? Maybe uwe boll lol

Some good points raised here.

I too hope that Seagal will lose some weight for his next role especially if he is appearing alongside a UFC fighter. Seagal's own lack of fitness will be even more evident when he is starring alongside someone like Anderson Silva.

Like JoshStern I feel my days of watching new Seagal films are over and this is mainly because he is no longer believable as an action star. I owned all his films on DVD and used to eagerly await his new releases. However as their quality deteriorated and it became evident that Seagal wasn't interested in getting into shape or about the quality of the productions, I became less and less enthusiastic. For a number of reasons I had to downsize my DVD collection and I thought long and hard about which ones I had to sell. What I realised though was that as a fan I had become accepting of the poor standards in Seagal's films always trying to make excuses for him or the producers. It was only when I compared his films to other action films, especially those starring his contemporaries like Stallone for example that I realised just how poor Seagal's films were. In the end I sold all but two of my Seagal DVDs. At the same time I took the active decision to really only post in the off topic section of the forum on subjects like other action films. This is because although I still consider myself a Seagal fan I am really only going to be active as a fan if and when he comes back as a more believable action star.

I think it is realistic that Seagal can get in the sort of shape he was in for Exit Wounds. There are a number of other action stars, some older than Seagal, who have maintained their physical shape. For example Stallone and as Kotegashi points out, Schwarzenegger too. After all he was out of films for 8 years yet has worked hard to get back into shape and back into action roles. Like Clement3000 points out if Seagal was in shape he would have no problem getting Under Siege 3 made as old school action films are back in fashion. But instead no serious producers will touch him, and he is left in DTV hell while other older action stars see a resurgence in their careers.

I really think it is make or break time for Seagal. Either he shapes up or the industry will ship him out for good.

You are absolutely right Marky. It's the truth but it makes me scared also...
Seagal has to do 2 things: Loose some weight and accept The Expendables 3!

I'm glad there are others who feel the same way about the situation. It is a scary time to be a Seagal can because the future isn't certain for him anymore. He is not getting any younger and the opportunities that are there now, with old school action stars making a comeback, isn't gonig to come round again. It's also scary for us fans because we have been following him thru his DTV films for 10 years now and there is just no sign of things getting better. Soon Seagal will have been making DTV films for longer than he even had cinema released films and that's a very sad fact.

I agree with you though that the two main things Seagal needs to do now are lose weight and get a role in the next Expendables film.

Yes absolutely, there is really nothing more to it than that.
