Here is Johnny Vaughn's review taken from The Sun on Friday 2nd May.
" I'm happy to tell you that in 'Half Past Dead', when a bandana- wearing, paunchy, sweating Steven Seagal bursts through a set of doors and runs down an exploding prison corridor - all in slow motion and with a grinding thrash metal soundtrack - we are witnessing cinematic gold.
I remember thinking: "It don't get better than this."
There are two types of Seagal fan - those who get the joke and those who don't. Both will love this film. Russian car thief Sascha (Seagal) works with Nick (Ja Rule). When they are busted, they are imprisoned in a reborn Alcatraz and where they would have stayed if some lunatic, Donny, had'nt decided to storm the prison with a crack bunch of crims (the 49ers) to kidnap death row inmate Lester (Bruce Weitz) and force him to reveal the whereabouts of $200 million in gold he stole.
I enjoyed this film immensely, especially the bit that invited us to believe convicts would rather fight to defend their prison than take an opportunity to escape.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? Give me Seagal anytime."
**** out of *****
Although the review has a hint of pisstake about it, I admire the fact that Johnny Vaughn can admitt to actually enjoying Seagal's films for what they are and lacks the snobbiness of other film critics (Johnathon Ross anyone) who slag off his films for the sake of it.
Peace
