Warner Bros remaking Under Siege.

Deadline just broke the news that Warner Bros will be remaking Under Siege. It will go directly to HBO max with Timo Tjahjanto directing (Headshot, Killers and The Night Comes for Us) and Umair Aleem writing (Kate and Extraction from 2015 with Bruce Willis).

EXCLUSIVE: A reboot of the 1992 hit Steven Seagal action movie Under Siege is underway at Warner Bros. with Timo Tjahjanto directing and Umair Aleem writing. The duo, I hear, collaborated and developed the pitch together with the movie being planned to stream on HBO Max.

There’s no word yet if Seagal will reprise his role as Casey Ryback, the ex-Navy Seal turned cook who was the only person in that movie to stop a group of terrorists from taking control of a U.S. battleship. The movie, directed by Andrew Davis, grossed over $156M WW when it was released and spawned a 1995 sequel Under Siege 2: Dark Territory which minted over $104M-plus WW. Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey starred in the first movie.

Indonesian filmmaker Tjahjanto got his start by directing the V/H/S/2 segment “Safe Haven”. He went on to direct The Night Comes for Us and May the Devil Take You, both titles which premiered at Fantastic Fest and are available on Netflix. Previously he wrote and directed Killers, Headshot and Portals. Tjahjanto is currently attached to direct Last Train to New York, the remake of the Korean hit Train to Busan for New Line. Atomic Monster and Gaumont are producing that feature alongside Gary Dauberman who wrote the script. Tjahjanto is also developing Lil Red with Christina Hodson, 8711, and Lucky Chap.

Aleem wrote the Netflix assassin action movie Kate which stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson. He also recently sold an original action adventure script The Paladin to Stampede Ventures with Greg Silverman and Jon Berg producing. Also in the works is Aleem’s original screenplay The Beast, which sold to Endeavor Content with Pete Berg producing and James Madigan set to direct.

Aleem is repped by Verve, Adam Kolbrenner’s Lit Entertainment and attorney Marios Rush. Tjahjanto is represented by WME, Management 360 and lawyer Marios Rush.

It'll be interesting to see how this develops, although in the best case scenario, perhaps a co-writing credit and/or a guest appearance by Seagal.
Depending on the script (and if Warner even wants Steven to appear in this) a brief cameo might be possible. Not holding my hopes up for it though.

I have little hope for this to be any good. Someone trying to play Seagal in 90's is not going to work.

Of course, there's very little information right now, but I personally doubt there'll be many similarities between this and the original. The tone will probably be different, the main character will be a cook, the setting being on a boat and maybe the villain having similar motives. The writer did a decent job on Kate, but the director is definitely very promising! If you haven't already, it's really worth checking out any of his work I mentioned above.

I highly doubt Seagal will be in this movie. Even a cameo role would be a surprise. Which is quite sad, I would like to see Seagal work with Tjahjanto.

Where's dida can't she try to get ahold of the director and ask him? I know somebody in this forum usually can get ahold of them for questioning

Sure, go ahead and ask some stuff on his Twitter. He has already responded to a few tweets about it (no real questions about the film/production, but he might not be able to talk about that yet). Of course Dida or someone else could always try and contact him about it (possibly through other ways). I guess the main thing we want to know if Seagal will have a cameo or not.

Further to my previous comment, it was of course inevitable that this, or one of the other high profile films by Seagal, would have been considered for a remake.

That's just the trend and I would be surprised myself if he was involved in any capacity.

I likely wouldn't care to see it anyway as the current trend in filmmaking doesn't appeal to me - but again, just curious to see how this evolves.

I looked at the twitter link provided by Juv.

The poster makes reference to "creating the Casey Ryback like you've never seen", suggesting a "resurrection". As I expected, very much comic book remake mentality.

Seagal's character said it best - "I'm just the cook". The spontainety is what makes it work - not overblown or overthought.

In any case, better for Seagal not to be associated. A late career highlight suited to his current abilities and strengths would be better.

If you look further you end up at the writers Twitter where he says 'Giving Casey Ryback an absolutely deranged punk rock makeover' with David Morrell's First Blood being a big inspiration

I didn't get that far because I'm not an enthusiast where social media is concerned. Thanks for pointing that out.

I just don't see reimagining Casey Ryback with a "deranged punk rock makeover" and a Rambo influence. Again, it sounds like a comic book concept.

Sorry, I am late to the party. I have no connections with this director unfortunately. I think asking on Twitter is the best possibility.

Although I'll wager both Warners & Seagal are not each others Christmas card list, the remake should(at least) feature a cameo by Seagal (if only for brand-recognition)
Better yet.....what better way to 'pass-the-torch' (so to speak) than have Seagal play 'Strannix'? (which would great, if he could only drop his omnipotence)

At very least, a remake could resurrect some interest in the original (and it may rub-off into some projects for Seagal?)

Aye, it was only a matter of time until this got remade. Let's be honest though, we were never going to get US3 like Seagal has been hoping for. Either way, I won't be watching any remake because it's not needed.
