This is a serious discussion of what Sensei needs to do to get back in the game, not soft porn. So I'd appreciate if this thread could be kept ON TOPIC.

By the way, there's no contradiction in what I originally said. In his regular action movies, the fact remains that Sensei needs to return to his old style of shooting a fight scene, because that's his core competency, that's what he does best. He does not do this Hong Kong style of fighting very well at all, and that's coming from someone who's been watching these kinds of movies for the last few decades.

A separate point I was making is that Sensei needs to reinvent his public image somewhat if he wants to get back up there in the A league. This has nothing whatsoever to do with his fight scenes. This has everything to do with being adventurous as an actor, taking on new challenges, becoming "hot" again. I will be a Sensei fan till I'm old and grey, whether he's hot or not, but in the bigger picture that's what he needs to do in order to get back to big budgets and decent directors and supporting cast. That's why I think the suggestion of hooking up with a savvy director like Quentin Tarantino (who is known for singlehandedly reviving careers, especially the careers of martial arts and action starts) would do wonders for Sensei's career.

Disciple, do you think these directors are looking for Seagal to make big budget action films nowadays?
Seagal is 52 or 53: what other 50 year old martial artist action star is out there now making action films? The answer is none...
I'd love to see Seagal do the type of films that made him popular and get bigger budgets and good directors-I'm sure he would like to have better directors as well(who would'nt)..Right now he is doing what he can and we are gonna have to be happy with that..At least he is still getting offers to make these smaller films but eventually that will stop as well if they start waning in popularity..
They have already cut the budget for "Into the Sun" to $25 million from what was initially reported to be a 40 million dollar budget..I'm also sure that if he eventually makes Ghenghis Khan he wont get no $40-$50 million dollar budget for that either. There is no way a studio is gonna make a epic with Seagal with that kind of money and a director named Annakin Skywarker who is almost 100 years old.
At this point I dont think we will ever see Seagal on the big screen again from the way things have looked lately..

I would love to see him completely diversify from the ever CIA, cop, special forces fighting image. He isn't the worlds greatest actor, but neither are many of the big box office stars. He has amazing presence, and wonderful timing, and he could so easily do a strong story with a light comedy touch. He has a wonderfully expressive face, and a smile to melt icebergs, and it would be good to see him spread his wings into mainstream stories. The films he currrently makes (ie. four in a year) are tantamount to television mini series, and will almost certainly all go straight to video. I wonder if his future career might go that way, perhaps into a television series, of 20/30 episodes a year, many biggish stars, ie Tom Salleck (?spelling) Rock Hudson Tony curtus have been that route and made a lot of money - It would certainly be nice to see him in a weekly series.

Tiggy, TV work is more lucrative than ever for big stars nowadays. The salaries that TV stars can command are pretty astronomical, at least as much as Sensei makes right now on his straight to video movies. That's why the quality of shows like The Sopranos and West Wing, etc is so high, because you get movie quality actors finding that they can do just as well in TV. So you begin to see people like Keifer Sutherland and Rob Lowe doing more and more TV work. Chuck Norris (who I am not even a fan of) made a huge success out of his Walker Texas Ranger show, which lasted for several seasons and mean that he never needed to work again once it reached syndication. Now I'm not saying that Sensei should do a TV show like Walker Texas Ranger, but I'm just trying to make a point. Sensei should REALLY consider some different, high quality TV work.

And Mike, you make a good point. By the way, I think that Anakin/Genghis Khan info was just a rumor. I don't think it's happening in reality because it would have been mentioned more in movie trade papers. I honestly don't think Genghis Khan will ever get made now.

I believe Sensei has a large family to maintain, business and film projects always on the go (right now he's doing two or three movies per year, which is a lot of time), doing press and publicity and functions, going around the world to visit different places, and other wordly concerns.

I don't think Sensei ever surfs the internet except maybe to check his mail. I definitely don't think he's ever going to read a fan site, whether official or unofficial, it just wouldn't be his style at all. I would be VERY surprised if he did. There are some stars who maintain close ties with fans and check out their own dedicated message boards, but they are few and far between.

I'm just looking at it from the knowledge that I have been visiting different Seagal sites since 97 and only once or twice on his "Official"site did we hear from him.I believe John Wayne could have made a movie from his death bed and it would have been a hit because he had/has a very strong fan base and he was not a very good actor. We fans are very important to an actor/actress and should be treated as such.I'm not saying slobbered over just appreciated.:)

I agree with you, we are important as fans. But as much as I would love to interact with Sensei on a message board, there's a kind of unwritten rule that stars don't really do that kind of thing. They maintain a distance from fans. You shouldn't be offended by it, that's just the way it is.

And like I say, even if Sensei wanted to check message boards like this, I doubt he'd have the time given his schedule. He's a very busy man. He doesn't have a desk job where he can spend hours and hours online checking out websites.

I think he surfs the net more than we will ever know. Between trips and nothing to do....I'm sure he has time. How else would he know what people (not the press) think about him? Now... answering to questions would be another matter. If he answers to one question people will ask more, and that can be inconvenient for him. And as far as his "style" goes.... that's only speculation. Who really know how he is? To me he's just human that's all.

BTW.....his movies to me are like soft porn. I also support them so my opinion should count.

Why do you think he even CARES what people think about him at this point in life? If I was him I wouldn't give two hoots what people thought of me. He's a 50 plus year old martial arts master, movie star, and family man. Not some insecure wreck who sits there worrying about what people on the internet think of him. Everything I've seen suggests that he is first and foremost concerned with the livelihood of his family and the continuation of his spiritual journey.

And if he read these boards, he might actually do something about pleasing hardcore fans like myself, instead of turning out the generic low quality stuff like he is now. Sorry to say, but it's true. I would die for Sensei but the truth is the truth.

Well I might comment on this that for example when a new movie of his is released that one of his personal may be interested to read what his fans are thinking about the movie. If it ain't for the fans renting/buying the movies,he ain't going to have anyone paying him a dime to make any! In time that will catch up with him or anyone that doesn't acknowledge his fans.

I suspect he does read the boards. This is the first time I have ever been on a fan board, and I wandered here primarily to find a list of available films, not to join in, but I liked what I saw, stayed, and enjoy being here. I come from the very privileged show biz background, and apart from my work, my friends are also in the business. I have sat for long dreary hours on film sets and watched big stars wander the time away on the net. I have seen their curiosity take them to sites about themselves, but, I have never seen any of them get involved, however, most seem to take a very regular look. Certainly it is a regular job for someone in the managers or agents office to surf the sites and precis the information found there. It's not how many gooey letters there are, but the constructive comments - even the not so constructive comments that are of interest. I have never met Steven, and never introduced into a conversation the words .. do you know/have you met Steven Seagal, it wouldn't be acceptable to do so, and for that reason it has never occurred to me that I know anyone he knows. Thanks to this site, and Suziwongs wonderful photographs I have now discovered that a great friend of mine is someone he likes and very much respects, and most of all spends time with!!! Sod it, he is out of the country touring, but the moment he gets back I will be there thinking of ways to engineer the conversation arround. I exercise this guys horses, so will have to think of a way in, usually the conversation is about stabling, shoeing, hay or what his ex wife has said! With luck, I should be able to meet Steven at one of my friends concerts, I will certainly be showing a lot more interest now when asked if i would like to fly out to a concert! Thanks Suziwong for the pictures - they are all brilliant, and just maybe they will make 2004 a brilliant year.

About most stars, I'll take your word for it I guess.

However, I cannot picture Steven Seagal sitting down between takes on a brutal hand to hand fight scene, to check out a fan message board. It's just a bit of a stretch, you know? :D

Steven's films are not all fight scenes, there are even children in some of them, and as they are choreographed the don't take for ever. Whateveer the movie, there are hours of hanging about, especially on location, either on set or in hotels which always seem miles from anywhere of interest.
