I got this idea when Serena said she was such a big Bob Seger fan... (By the way, not sure if it's in the right place but I didn't post this in the music section because it's not really related to SS music)

So who are your favourite singers and bands? A few of mine off the top of my head (will post more later when I remember):

Queen

The Bee Gees

Smokey Robinson

George Benson

Huey Lewis

Jackie Wilson

Bob Marley

Sting

Great idea, Disciple! (I agree. I think it belongs in this section.) Also off the top of my head, in no particular order, but I know I'll think of more. And thanks for not limiting it to top 5 or 10. Too many out there. :)

- Bob Seger
- Dean Martin
- Beatles (early stuff)
- Beach Boys
- Alice Cooper
- Queen
- Billy Joel
- AC/DC
- Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
- Frank Sinatra
- Elton John
- Bee Gees
- Johnny Mathis
- Jefferson Starship
- Chicago
- Willie Nelson
- The Mamas and the Papas
- The Monkeys (guilty  :D)

Believe me, folks. I'm really not 60, though you might think so from some of my choices. :D
Not that there's anything wrong with 60, I'd better hasten to add.;)

Good one, I like a few of theirs, especially Oh What a Night.

Also, good call on AC/DC. I like them a lot, I actually like (or used to like, when I was a kid) heavy rock and even heavy metal. Other faves include Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Megadeth. :gun:

But I listened to a lot of that stuff when I was a brat and wanted to annoy my parents. It's embarassing to admit to it, actually. :p

Hey, Disciple--Do you suppose those "kids today with their baggy pants and their hip hop music" (to quote a wise man ;)) are doing the exact same thing? :D

Disciple

Probably. But I never wore baggy pants. Leather jackets with studs and heavy metal band patches on the back maybe, but NEVER baggy pants. :D

Queen (nothing after News of the World, though, because their lovely operatic voices were starting to decay)

Early Beatles

Early Elvis Presley (from the 1950s only)

Buddy Holly

BB King

Chicago

Lighthouse

Guess Who

BTO

Dr. Hook

Beach Boys (nothing beats Pet Sounds!) and others of the same ilk, like Jan and Dean

Village People

The Monkees (yeah, yeah, I know; but I like their music) and by extension, Boyce and Hart who wrote a lot of their stuff before they started writing their own

See, I'm not a complete dork! Only I loathe just about everything after the sixties onward (with a few exceptions)

Most of the music from the 70s, 80s and 90s should be excised from our collective memories. Anyone remember the Bay City Rollers, for example? (TD shudders, remembering not only their music but their fashion statement)

----

On another note (ahem), had a slightly surreal experience channel surfing one day past a Buffalo-based telethon to find Bowser of Sha-na-na (complete with ciggies tucked into the sleeve of his black t-shirt) playing Flight of the Bumblebee (jazz version) on the piano backed up by a small orchestra.

Anybody here remember the TV show Sha-na-na had?

-TD, dating herself horribly now

some hip-hop for you hip hipsters :=)))

I don't know about making-parents-mad as the reason for listening to hip-hop, but hip-hop has its beat that todays crowd (young crowd) can follow. The lyrics are very simplistic, and kids can come up with their own versions that can follow the beat of a specific song. That's what's so good about it. The messages in the lyrics are not (for most part) made to sound too serious (noone is trying to encourage you to do things that are said). The music can get angry just like any rock song (unlike Beatles however, but that's hardly even rock by today's standards), and can relieve tension (like when coming out of a bad exam, and there's nobody around who you could hit hard without feeling sorry for them ... except a wall - but that can get too painful depending on the extreme feelings leaving that exam room). Hip-hop is not intended for the generations from 60's or 70's. The 80's is when it really got started, but wasn't as big as it was in the late 90's till today.

And there are arguments made in the music communities (and professional music schools and universities) that rap should not even be considered as music, because it lacks those 'properties' that have one to be considered as a musician. I mean compare Eminem to Metallica or to Duke Ellington.

And for your information: many parents actually enjoy some hip-hop too, just like many enjoy rock (maybe not grunge style, but still).
