I have become very interested in this martial art, and think it is one of the best martial arts for self defense.

~Can some one briefley describe the styles of Aikido and what they concentrate on, in addition to what Seagal has practiced and mastered.

~Also what is the history of Aikido?

Many thanks!

For the last time... Steven Seagal is a member of aikikai. This is an umbrella organisation not a style. Steven Seagal like anyone else has his own style. He just happen to have a name connected with it. He doesn't train Tenshin aikido and Aikikai. He trains aikido period and are a member of aikikai. More generally, he train aikikai aikido, even though this is not a style it is still what is generally said when one refers to what kind of aikido one is training. If I train within the organisation of Gozo Shioda I would say that I train Yoshinkan Aikido. If I train in the organisation of Koichi Tohei I would say that I train in Ki societey aikido or perhaps just Ki aikido. And if I am a member of aikikai I would generally say that I train aikikai aikido. But most often I would say that I train aikido period.

Littledragon,

I can see you are very active lol, a compliment. In the beginning, intern, and ending it is alway most important to study the basics.
"American aikido" has lost this concept. Yes that is a whole other topic.
The basic of aikido are Tai-no-hen-ko (basic exercises) we study at least six before technique. With these exercises you can go into numours technique. I would concentrate on these and of course ukemi (the art of falling). "The ability to fall preceeds the ability to throw" by Creig Dunn.

As far as I know he has practiced karate up to 1 dan or so and is training and teaching aikido where he is 7th dan. He has also trained alot in classic school of Kenjutsu, Yagyu Shinkage Ryu I believe.
Master is a very strange word for me since it to me imply some sort of completeness in learning, which doesn't go well with being an artist on a path of ever learning. It's a word to commonly refered to when people discuss their or others ability in MA. I would bet money on that Steven himself would not consider himself as having MASTERED aikido or any MA. Of curse he is great at aikido and kenjutsu as far as I know.
But I could be wrong...

Thanks for giving us your POV, aikilove...
He's very humble, and to me that's admirable, but he should also be very proud of his status and his accomplishments...
I read an interview with him once and as far as I could tell, he does not truly consider himself a master of anything....
He said something about the title of master being something totally different on paper vs. truly mastering an art...
I think what he means is that one can never stop learning...
One is always able to improve one's knowledge and skill, especially with new styles and techniques available...
Of course in the MA world he is unsurpassed, and he is considered
a true master, to me he is most awe inspiring and accomplished...
In the interview, he called himself a dog in the gutter with fleas, or something like that, but for that I had to laugh out loud...
He is the most intelligent, talented, and vibrant man I have ever experienced, but of course my experience is limited and from afar, only from what I see on screen, really...
So I can only imagine how very much he is respected and admired in the MA world...
Whatever master means, perhaps for him it's not definable to onesself, but to others as you said, to ones teacher to the founders like, O' Sensei, etc...

Disciple

come get some
Personally, I call him things like "Master" and "Sensei" just as terms of endearment. Sometimes I use it just to amuse myself and my friends, just to act as if we all call him Sensei becuase he's our Aikido teacher or something.

It doesn't really matter to me what the correct official/technical way to address him would be.
