Actor and reincarnated lama Steven Seagal spoke at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre Tuesday night, encouraging people to help each other.

"We're raised to believe all phenomena revolves around us," he said. "People tend to look at life in terms of I, me, mine."

Seagal said that by not breaking these patterns of thinking, we are led "into a viscious circle of ignorance ... anything bad we do to others, we do to ourselves."

Before long a few spectators became swept away by Seagal's message, screaming "Yes! Yes!" as Seagal made his point. Equally heartfelt sentiments emerged as the audience questioned Seagal for advice on life.

A small girl in the balcony asked "What's the true meaning of love?" and a man in the back of the theater asked how to put aside the anger of being physically and emotionally abused as a child.

When asked about the waves of violence plaguing society, Seagal said: "There seems to be a great spiritual awakening around the world. Times are getting more and more degenerate."

Seagal also said that after taking a three year break from making action movies like Under Seige ,, he would like to return to Hollywood to make spiritual movies. The R-rated film star emphasized the harmful effects of violence in the media.

"Stop watching Jerry Springer, stop buying The Enquirer and do not feed the people who survive on this trash," he said.

Bedford resident and IU employee Kenna Alexander came because her husband is a Seagal fan who practices Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do. Although she attends a Christian church, Alexander liked Seagal's message.

"It wasn't a spiritual thing that I came up here," she said. "But I was impressed. How you live your life directly affects everybody else. I think he's right on."
