Sashi 2001: What an Experience!
By Dave Lindo and Cecelia Campbell-Livingston

Sashi Awards Dinner
The much-anticipated Sashi experience 2001 kicked off on a high note on Wednesday, August 22, with the Awards Dinner at the luxurious Ritz Carlton Hotel, Rose Hall, Montego Bay.

The specially invited guests were elegantly dressed to kill and comprised local and overseas celebrities, among whom were filmstar/singer Steven Seagal, Grammy kid Shabba Ranks and Marcia Forbes, general manager, TVJ.

With radio disc jockey, Jerry D, acting as master of ceremony, the proceedings got under way with AJ Brown and his band setting the tone right with some quality music, which was soothing to the ear. He later gave way for Papa San who ministered to the people with the music of his newfound faith and was well received by the audience.

Next came the auction, which was in aid of the Mona Rehabilitation Centre now known as the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre, an institution for patients suffering with spinal cord injuries. On auction were a crystal bowl which Shabba Ranks bought for US$1000, watches, earrings, necklaces and some of Steven Seagal's personal possessions, which included some jackets that he wore in his movies and an autographed knife which he had in the movie Under Seige 1. Most of the items went for between US$1000 to US$2000. The event culminated with the presentation of awards.

The first award was the 2001 Sashi Humanitarian Award, which went to Steven Seagal. Chris Blackwell was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, which local actor and dancer Carl Bradshaw accepted on his behalf. Singer/actress and producer, Sheryl Lee Ralph, received the 2001 Sashi Patriotic Award, Sly and Robbie received the 2001 Lifetime Achievement in Music Award and Louise Fraser Bennett, the Sashi Public Service Award. At minutes to midnight, the beautiful evening regrettably came to an end. However, for all the party lovers the place to be after the dinner was at Margueritaville, host of the after party.

"SASHI 2001, dubbed 'the experience', kicked off at the ballroom of the upscale Ritz Carlton Hotel, Rose Hall, Wednesday night, with a well attended awards dinner which saw the presentation of five major awards to individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation especially in the field of entertainment.

Despite the late start, the approximately 700 guests, which consisted of a selected group of both local and overseas invitees representing the field of music, fashion, politics, commerce and film, left the ballroom at about midnight feeling satisfied with the night's proceedings.

Actor-turned-musician, Steven Seagal received the Sashi 2001 Humanitarian Award for his sterling contribution to the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre, Mona.

After accepting the award, Seagal expressed his gratitude to the Centre's management for giving him the opportunity to serve at the institution.

Said the actor, who has played lead roles in several movies: "For me, money and fame are not the greatest things in life. Instead it is my ability to help others that really matters."

Other Sashi 2001 awardees were businessman Chris Blackwell, who was recognised for his contribution in the field of entertainment; actress Sheryl Lee Ralph who was awarded for her patriotism; reggae music's 'Riddim Twins' Sly and Robbie and Sound Systems Association president, Louise Frazer- Bennett.

The guests were also treated to an entertainment package which featured the likes of carabet singer AJ Brown, singer Della Manley, guitarist Seretse Small and gospel deejay Papa San.

Brown's set was somewhat disappointing, while there were good crowd responses for Small and Manley, who impressed with their guitars.

But, it was the fast-talking deejay Papa San, who brought the house down with his gospel songs and who no doubt touched the hearts of many, as he ministered.

Papa San started his set with Love Inna Mi Heart from his successful Victory album and then went on to do a number of selections from his upcoming album which included Satan Yu Lose Again and Armour.

When the artistes left the stage, the much anticipated Dutch auction which netted in excess of US$6,500 took centerstage.

Entertainer Shabba Ranks took the crystal ball which was donated by Bijoux jewellers, for a whopping US $1,000 while a knife used by actor Steven Seagal in the movie Under Siege One, fetched US$650.

Proceeds from the auction will go to the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre in Mona, Kingston.

Last night, the Sashi Fashion Collection Show and Champagne Party was slated to be held at the Rose Hall Great House while today the Sashi Boxer party takes place at the San Souci Beach in Ocho Rios.

Seagal will host the Sashi Kiddies Fun Day at the James Bond Beach on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, the Sashi Dime Party will be staged at the Rennaissance Jamaica Grande, Ocho Rios.

The days of activities culminate on Sunday with the 3rd annual Sashi concert which features Sean 'P Diddy' Combs, Tyrese, Jimmy Cozier, Case, Kevon Edmonds as well as local acts Shabba Ranks, Lady Saw and Voise Mail".

Seagal promises love and fun at his Sashi Kids Day

NORMAN MUNROE, Entertainment Editor

"AMERICAN motion picture star, Steven Seagal, is looking forward to a day of fun and happiness with the thousands of children that he will be hosting at James Bond Beach, Oracabessa, today.

Speaking with the Observer, the American actor cum musician spoke of plans for today's activities, as well as immediate prospects in his twin film and music careers. A great admirer of Jamaica and a lover of reggae music, Seagal also had a message for Jamaicans and the island's political leaders. Speaking against the backdrop of the renewed wave of violence that has been sweeping the island, he urged a return to peace and unity.

"I really want everybody in Jamaica to understand the words that Bob Marley left us with, which was about, you know, about love and oneness; one love."

He expressed the hope that "the leaders of Jamaica concentrate on helping everyone work together, live together with tolerance and understanding" and he described the violence as "really unfortunate".

"Perhaps all the work that Bob Marley did -- all the hard work he put forward to bring us all together (was in vain but I hope), that people would harken back to that," Seagal said.

Fresh from receiving the 2001 Sashi Humanitarian Award at Wednesday's Awards Banquet in Montego Bay, Seagal, said he is quite looking forward to meeting and interacting with the children. As many as 5,000 children, many of them disabled or handicapped, drawn from orphanages, children's homes, clubs and schools, are expected to be be entertained during today's activities.

"We're hoping to give them some love, some attention, some affection and hopefully raise some money for them," he told the Observer.

The children will play games, be entertained and they will also be fed.

"Steven's passion for Jamaican music is only surpassed by his willingness to give his time to the youth of Jamaica," said Horatio Hamilton, Sashi founder and CEO. "It is in tribute to that philosophy that we invited him to perform, and commemorated a special day for him during the 'Experience' where he can spend time and share his adventures with the kids."

Come Sunday, the martial arts master, who is also an accomplished musician, will be appearing, along with his band, on the Sashi Concert, to be held at the same venue, the headline act for which will be hip hop artiste Sean 'P Diddy' Combs and his Bad Boy Records family.

For his performance, Seagal said that the audience can expect "a little bit of reggae, a little bit of world (beat and) a little bit of pop. A little bit of R&B, maybe". Seagal visited Jamaica earlier this year and did some recordings with icons Toots Hibbert, Rita Marley and deejay Beenie Man. The songs recorded during those sessions, Segal said, should appear on his next album, however no release date for the set has yet been announced.

In terms of his acting schedule, Seagal told the Observer that he has two back-to-back movies in the works location shooting on the first of the two is expected to take place in Germany, beginning in September. The working title for one of the films, he says is Half Past Dead, and the theme of the plot centres on "the recovery of a lot of money".

"I get locked up in prison, I play a thief and a cop and stuff like that."

A lover of reggae music, Seagal, who battled a Jamaican drug lord in Marked For Death, some years ago, says he has also been in discussion with Rita Martley and Marcia Griffiths about the possibility of doing a film on the life of reggae king Bob Marley. He noted, however, that nothing has been decided as yet.

"My great desire in life is to do the Bob Marley story; the real Bob Marley story, about his life and his music," Seagal said."

That because if they report all the good he does, people might stop beliveing all the bull they say about him...Sence Steven don't kiss their butts they don't like him and don't want anyone esle to like him either.. Sad how the press gets to help make or try to break a star...
Look at George Clooney he said something agaist the press once when Princess Di was killed and they wouldn't show him and say anthing good about him so he had to kiss their butts so they would say good things about his next movie, and then he was such a good guy in their eyes for kissing ass on tv..

Wow, Steven is really, really wonderful and so down to earth...I wish I could have seen the concert, that is one of my biggest desires...I really want to see him perform...I heard the Marley's have a big estate that you can visit in Jamaica...Both Bob and Ziggy are still hugely popular in Hawaii....Someone should do a movie about them, why not...:D
