Supposedly, he invented his own style first (wow, what a guy, huh? )

Is it called, Ki?
But for sure, I dunno, what his style is called...
Can someone please clarify that for us?
Thank-You...
Aikilove said:He took his shodan (1 dan, blackbelt) examined by Koichi Tohei sensei, the founder of the Ki Society and efter he moved to Japan I think he was still with Tohei for a short while, before moving on to other instructors. So although Tohei was the examinator for his first grade I belive it was aikikai and not within Toheis new organisation. So I think Seagal has always been an aikikai member from the begining to present.

Aikilove said:No, Ki aikido alias, Ki society, alias ki no kenkyukai is the creation of Koichi Tohei.
Tohei sensei was one of few that actually recieved a high grade directly by O-sensei. For a while after the founders death he was hombu dojocho i.e. the chief of teaching staff at the main dojo of aikikai i.e. the organization of the founder. After a lot of turmoil partly because Tohei's pedagogic was heavily influenced by ki exercises from other (meditative/yoga arts) Tohei decided to break out and form his own organisation ki no kenkyukai or ki society. Before this though he was often in USA while he still was high up in the aikikai promoting people. I don't know if he promoted Seagal before of after the split. Either way S. Seagal has always been member of aikikai.
As I said Aikikai is an umbrella organisation headed first by O-sensei then his son late doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba and now his grandson i.e. Kisshomaru's son, Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba. Most aikidokas in the world are members of a national aikido organisation that in turn are a member of aikikai, hence most aikidoka are members of aikikai.
There are other organisations that are "legit" some of which are in good terms with aikikai.
Yoshinkan Aikido (founded by Gozo Shioda, a prewarII student of O-sensei) are seperate but in good foot with aikikai. Focus alot on the basics in a 1-2-3 fashion.
Yoseikan Budo (founded my Minoru Mochizuchi, prewarII student of both Jigoro Kano of Judo and O-sensei. Also studied Tenshin Katori Shinto ryu.) Combines Aikido, Judo, Karate, and kenjutsu in this eclectic system.
Kinokenkyukai, Ki society (founded by Koichi Tohei) So called "soft Aikido" focus alot on ki excercises.
These are 3 of a couple of non-aikikai organisations that are considered legit aikido organisations.
But as I said most knowned instructors today are members of aikikai, including Seagal, Yamada, Chiba, Tamura, Nishio, Abe and Kobayashi, to name a few, even if they have theirown organisations around them e.g. all blackbelt fees goes to Aikikai Hombu dojo in Tokyo whereas in the case of the other organisations the fees goes to respective head dojo of Yoshinkan etc.
