Hello SAS

I'm not sure how the Tenshin Dojo grades, however I study with Isoyama Shihan a direct student from O'Sensei for over 20 years and our belt system is. Everyone wares a white belt until nikyu (2 grade) which then you wear brown until shodan. But I've read a few articles that state when students practiced with O'Sensei they had to where a hakama or would not be able to practice. Reason being is the hakama represents Budo. So if you don't ware it you are like practicing in your pjays. Another thing, after WWII it was to costly in Japan to buy a Hakama, so the "Shot callers" in Aikido said it would be easy to adapt the same gradeing system as Dr. Kano Sensei from judo and only as a shodan would you have to attain a hakama. Hope this might shed some light for you. Depending on where you study. Differnt strokes for different folks. Good training to you. Doitashimashite
