Evil United States-ians

Requiring prison inmates to wear a photo ID tag that lists race along with their name, date of birth, eye and hair color, weight and height is an egregious example of racial profiling that is innapropriate, illegal and another sad example of how corrupt American values are creeping into Canadian society, reports the Toronto Star.

The Central North Correctional Centre, “run by a U.S.-based private corrections company,” the paper helpfully tells us in the second graph, uses the IDs to keep track of inmates.

But Toronto lawyer Julian Falconer, a prominent voice on race relations, called them a “perfect example of systemic racism” and unquestionably a violation of the prisoners’ human rights.

"Compelling inmates to bear their race ... is completely abhorrent to our value system and this is a perfect example of why leaving our jails up to private interests guarantees all kind of injustices," Falconer said.

Barry Scanlon, an official with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, said the policy "just shows that they brought America up to our prison system."

"This is another example of what happens when you let a private operator from a foreign country run one of your prisons," he said.

Maybe their figuring is they need to list their race as a means of identification...but my opinion of prison run operators is that even the DOC is power hungry & doesn't follow their own rules.

The DOC has always been a bane to society; yet the element they have to deal with is also. There IS one advantage to listing all information on an id badge: there is no confusion as to the person's identity. An acquintence who was once incarcirated has a perfect example: a guard entered his cell and handed him his "walking papers" and told him to get packed, he was going home. Well, this person knew his time wasn't up yet and that something was wrong. "Who's name is on that paper?" ... "Your name ( )" ... "Ok, but is there is photo of me on that paper too?" ... "Yes" ... "Well, does that photo look like me?" ... ooppps, no! Not unless someone changed skin color! So, photo id's and clear ID do make sense, especially in this case! Can you imagine the trouble he'd been in if he'd gone out KNOWING it wasn't right?! The sad thing about it though, is that there are NO RIGHTS in prison! Not much good debating it.

Weird ! I think there has to be a more logical, ethical, and less demeaning way to identify the prisioners. Hospital, scool, airport, and other employees, now wear picture name tags which makes sense (at least in a Hospital), but it doesn't have all that racial stuff. Good point Mr. or Whoever Hogan.
