Hello Friends,
I havn't posted in several years, but thought I'd drop this one today. I have been studying Jujitsu for five years and have a strong Kenpo backround. Lately I have been thinking of switching to Aikido, because Jujitsu is very hard on the body. There are three Aikido Dojo's in my town. I have friends in one of them. I love to play with my Aikido friends and share knowledge but sometimes it gets me into trouble in my dojo, For example, my Aiki friends have shown me to use Ikkyo to defend an overhead shomen uchi, and they emphasize useing the tenkan step as the foot work. I like the tenkan because I am not very strong and using a little "dance" helps me manuver into a place of control. However, my Jujitsu instructors are adament about me taking uke straight down with no circle step! (they don't teach Ikkyo as such, but teach the "ulna press" which is similur). Any way I am nearing my brown belt test, but am thinking of switching to Aikido. The Aikidoka at the Dojo I am thinking of, trace thier liniage to Frank Duran Shihan, who I think is in the Bay Area (CA, USA) Has anyone heard of him??
Wishing you all happy holidays....

Doran Sensei was a student of the founder of aikido (there aren't that many left) so you can't go wrong there.

jhogan and Aikilove,
Thanks for the links and info. Looks like Duran Shihan trained with BJ Carlisle, who might be the same person we see at the end of "path beyond thought"

Thanks for the clarification Aikilove, it is embarassing to mispell a professer's name. I did have the privalige of attending a class taught by Doran Shihan, but at the time I was not savvy enough with Aikido to walk away with much technique (I did walk away with a sense of awe). I had the incorrect assumption that Aikido and Jujitsu were simuler, but Aikido is much more refined and sohpisticated, and once again I was humbled.

TenShin Aikidoka, I see you wear a Hakama. What does it require to put a Hakama on?
Much Respect,

Good skill in tying one mainly. Actually, it can require many things. Mostly you have to be dan ranked in a Japanese art. Sometimes it is worn when practising weapons. Sometimes you just have to buy one and pretend to look good in it for no reason!!!

Yes, Frank Doran is a wonderful Aikido Sensei. His dojo is in Redwood City (halfway between San Jose and SF.) He is also the main Sensei at the Stanford University Aikido Club. I had the pleasure to train under him when I was attending Stanford from 99-04. But, still, my main teacher is Steven.

Peace!

Rinpoche,
You wear the robes of a lama. You must have a deep Vajrayana practice, as well as being a direct student of Seagal Shihan. You don't look very old (at least not in the body). You wouldn't happen to know Lama Loden, would you? He moved up here from the Bay Area and It sounds like thats your stomping grounds? Anyway, thank you for sharing,
Much Respect,

Hello Beyond,

I am not familiar with a Lama Loden, but I DO know of a Lama Lodo up in SF. Where in the Bay Area is this Lama you speak of? I am just a mediocre practioner of the Dharma......always a student! I am 39......sometimes I DO feel older.

Peace!

Hello Rinpoche,
I hope I am spelling Lama's name right, but his accent is very thick. Believe it or not, I met him working in an Punjabi restaurant, here in Ashland, OR. Where he was helping out. But what he really is doing is helping two of his female disciples put a Tibetan Center together here. I know they are from SF, but I don't know much more. I should make sure I am spelling his name right. It would be most embarassing to have mispelled two teachers names on one thread. Thank you again Rinpoche.
