Hello, I'm new here, so don't shout, if such question already has been here, 'couse I haven't surfed this forum yet. :)

So, I've got question - has Seagal ever taken part in some Kumite? If yes, what about results?

I ask, becouse one of my friends said, that he has seen a video casette (kid of PowerMan or what), where Seagal took part. I'm not shore, 'couse competition in aikido is not allowed (as O'Sensei told).

"Kumite" is a martial arts tournament which supposedly brings together the best fighters from around the world to duke it out (see the Jean Claude Van Damme movie "Bloodsport" for details)

Kumite:
Kumite (sparring) is a dynamic action reaction exercise that teaches timing and distancing. There are two main types of Kumite. Ippon Kumite (one point sparring) practices fighting techniques against an opponent in a static situation. Both block and counter are experienced by the two participants. Jiyu Kumite (free sparring) is an exercise that practices fighting techniques against an opponent in a more dynamic fashion. Blocks and strikes are thrown out freely in a controlled manner between the two opponents. Kumite conditions the individual through constant practice to approach an opponent with a calm mind. The general purpose of Kumite teaches the basic elements of fighting in a controlled environment. It teaches distancing, timing, balance technique, focus and perception of attacks.

I don't think Steven would ever fight in competition, we have discussed this before, somewhere on here...I think the thing is that a true martial artist develops humilty and doesn't believe in do things to show off, or upstage someone else, you know what I mean...Self defense is another matter, and when a guy gets his butt kicked, it takes him down a few rungs, and teaches him a lesson...Merely hurting people is not the purpose of the arts at all, the purpose them is to develop the spiritual side of ones self, at least that is what sensei has tried to explain, as far as I can gather...

My definition of kumite is the same as Amos' and I think that when Steven trained s*h*i*t*o ryu karate he probably also underwent kumite ("crossing of hands").

Bimmer,
I am still learning how to post so I hope I get this in the right spot.
Kumite is a karate term which basically means "sparing" another word for this activity is Randori, which is more commonly used in dicliplines like Aikido and JuJitsu. When you watch the opening sequences in "Above the Law" you are actually watching footage from Seagal Shihan's class where he is being judged on his Randori by a Group of Japanese Sensei's, which was part of a test he was taking (I think). There are students of Seagal Shihan doing randori in "A Path Beyond Thought". The rules are a little different with randori, in comparison to Kumate, because students would have broken arms and necks and not be able to return to class if they went "all out", but Jujitsuka's and Aikidoka's come as close as they can to reality with this training exersise. I am quite sure that Seagal Shihan has spent many hours showing the world his mastery of Randori, which is his game making it something of a moot point when others try to fit him in the "box" of what they call their game.

Maybe be, maybe not.

Don't be so quick to beleive what you see in the movie is fact. I'm not saying it is or it isn't. Just don't assume it's the truth. Hollywood in the past has done stuff in regards to martial arts and movies that is at least in some regards not true.

The Ninja crazy of the '80's is one example, possibly the biggest one. They get actors that did Karate or someother art and try to pan it off as Ninjutsu. Intoducing weaponse such as the nunchaku, and sai (Kubudo weapons and not Ninjutsu weapons). They also made up the Ninja-to/ken. When in fact the Ninja used Katana's.

Anyway my point is not to take it as factual...BTW it's my favorite Van Damme Movie ;)

Far as I know Kumite is sparring.
