Help, what is the rule for.....

Can anyone explain what the rule is for using images on/off the internet? How does one know which ones you can use freely without infringing on a copyright? Shouldn't someone need permission before they can use someones photograph, like Steven's for example? I am concerned, and just want to know what the rules are...And also, can someone please explain hot linking? Thanks...:)

Well I gave my opinion ofbn this in another thread but I'll re-post it...perhaps you are asking if others have another view on this subject.....

(from previous post)
LOL..there is no rule..if everybody waited to get permission; there'd be no pics on the internet.....
my thoughts are......I use any and everything I want.........'till I get a letter from Warner, etc telling me to pull a certian item I use whatever I feel is needed.......
It's really up to the people that run a particular site that determines what goes & what doesn't.......I've gotten jumped on at some sites about "copywrite infringement" and "taking the food off a artists table"..lol.....seriously.....
The commercial sites ...EX: StevenSeagal.com......would have to be a bit more cautious in this area due to possible litigations....that's why independent sites are always better...because anything goes and allows us to use and make available things normally not obtainable due to copywrite.
That's one of the reasons I like it here......we have free reign to post anything ....and the site is also "under control" so things don't get out of hand......actuall to me......it's the best set up one can have......many people put up sites or message boards and then just let them go.....and of course they turn into crap after awhile(ss.com)
So in essense......if it's your site or page......you determine your boundaries....
Back in the early days of my site....Maavwick & I started on the same weekend and we worked together looking for this and that......she went one direction and I another so we didn't post the exact same things....during the course of the 1st year Seagal contacted her and I asked her to ask him about web-sites.....he said he really doesn't mind web sites about him at all as long as what we post is truthful in nature.......this is why Maavwick changed her site name to "the only we-site officially endorsed by Steven Seagal"....(this was 5 years before SS.COM saw the light of day.......why they waited so long is anybody's guess.....I was told it was to cash in on Exit Wounds publicity in order to sell merchandise....I also was told(from Ten Shin Dojo) that Seagal was not exactly fond of this idea)
so even if somebody jumped on my ass about using this or that it would be the company worried about some kind of loss profits and not Seagal himself.....but then this was back in '97...during the release of Fire Down Below and Seagal was very more open at that time.
John
so all in all ....it's up to you to determine what "rules" pertain to your site.

I never saw the term before...but to me it would indicate a "direct active link"...meaning clicking on the link would take you directly there...and the link is good(active)
otherwise I have no idea what it means......unless it's a porno link........lol
could also be just someone's term they use to get people to go there......thinking it's something 'special' by using the word 'hot'
