In the Belly of the Kingdom

Published on May 2, 2003

Since filming of ‘The Beach’ caused such a ruckus in Thailand, Hollywood producers have been wary of coming here. However, Steven Seagal begs to differ. He’s in the thick of things filming his latest flick, ‘Belly of the Beast’.

While some Hollywood producers are reluctant to shoot a movie in Thailand after the storm of controversy that surrounded filming of “The Beach” in 1999, Steven Seagal is not among them. In fact, he has even spent US$1 million (Bt42 million) of his own money to shoot his latest action movie here.

“I think there are some unknown quantities. ‘The Beach’ was a terrible experience and many Hollywood people vowed they’d never shoot again either in Bangkok or in Thailand after that,” says Seagal, as the racket of rifle fire in the Thewet area near Banglamphu dies down and the crew sets up some more props for the next scene of “Belly of the Beast”.

The film is directed by Tony Ching (of “Hero” fame) and written by Seagal.

“Belly of the Beast” is about a former CIA agent (played by Seagal) who has to rescue his kidnapped daughter. The quest leads him on a trail of political intrigue, corruption, danger and betrayal.

Thankfully, Seagal is not the only Hollywood name coming back to the Kingdom. Other films, including “Beyond Borders” starring Angelina Jolie, and “Around the World in 80 Days”, starring Jackie Chan, have recently been filmed here. Along with regular visits by producer-director Oliver Stone (“Nixon”, “Heaven & Earth”) to scout out location possibilities, all this activity would seem to indicate that Thailand has by no means been written off by international filmmakers.

Sporting a pony tail and a black, Chinese-style long-sleeved shirt, the Buddhist Aikido master greets the crowds with a wai accompanied by a Sawaddee krap and Sabai dee mai? in a clear accent.

Seagal is ready to be interviewed but even at 10pm, the heat is so unbearable that crew members have to fan him.

So, Seagal is asked: has he ever faced any obstacles to making films in Thailand?

“Only the heat,” he mutters.

There are several Thai actors involved in the film, 90 per cent of which is being shot in Bangkok, Hua Hin and Nakhon Ratchasima’s Khao Yai National Park.

The cast includes Sara Malakul Lane as Seagal’s daughter Jessica, Chakrit Yamnam as Jessica’s boyfriend, and Pongpat Wachirabanjong as chief of the Abu Karaf (no relation to the non-fictional Abu Sayyaf of the Philippines), which kidnaps Jessica.

Seagal compliments Chakrit and Pongpat, saying they are both talented actors and easy to work with. Sara, he says, is hardworking and looks like she could be his own daughter as they are both of mixed blood – Seagal has a daughter born to a Japanese mother.

However, the actor says he was disappointed that he couldn’t get to work with everybody he wanted, such as his old friend Ad Carabao, with whom the actor performed in a recent concert.

Carabao is currently on tour.

The Nation was prevented from asking Seagal directly if there was any truth to the rumour that the US mafia had threatened him.

Instead, the film’s PR officer responded: “Sorry, no questions about the mafia are allowed.”

“Belly of the Beast”, which wraps up its Thai shoot on Tuesday, will be released in the US in time for Christmas and in Thailand early next year.

I don't know how much he eats, maybe he uses plastic dishes so I'll simply throw them away and do something more pleasant...

Wow this guy is the best. His ponytail, his squinting, his fixed facial expression, the way he flaps his arms around his general ability to do anything, I bet he's even good at Feng Shui. His lardiness makes great political and evironmental movies, he's an aspiration to us all, I think he must be due an Oscar some day.

Steven you're the best. Dont forget to get your pies out the oven!.

Under Seige 3

So it's finally confirmed, Under Seige 3 is on the way, and I just cant wait, I just hope he aint ate all them pies he left in the oven in the first one.

But seriously, playing 'Casey Ryback' a third time I think, should bring Steven at least an Oscar nod, as long as the script is good. He's been away too long, I just can't wait to see his expert moves once again combined with his culinary skills used to full and totally unique effect that only Seagal could possibly do.

Cool, unflappable, THE BEST....

On Deadly Ground

Thanks for the support and guidance my friends. I have spent this afternoon watching On Deadly Ground, what a movie, this was one I havent seen so far and have been knocked for six at its amazing depth and conscience.

I think Steven's character Forrest Taft is the ultimate Eco Warrior - a true hero for modern times, It's such an effortless role for Steven, I'm sure he's really just playing himself here, a real roll model.

It's just great to see a Huge Hollywood star like Steven use his weight to get movie's like this made, a movie that has political and evironmental messages as its subject matter, and of course some of that Seagal screen charisma and magic, I think in any other Hollywood star's hands this would have come across as clumsy and dumb, but once agian Steven coolness has made it real and believable.

I really hope that a sequel 'On deadlier ground' isnt too far away.;)

The closest you'll see to that has already been done as 'Fire Down Below".......
ODG was not well recieved by the critics...for the exact opposite reasons that you liked it.........
"How dare a hollywood actor use his movies to try and get a personal message about his own concerns across to the audience"......
I liked it myself......think it's one of his better ones if I had to list my likings in order......many people hated it....they didn't tlike the idea of having to 'think' while watching a movie......
ODG also marked the beginning of a complete turn around by the critics.....going from praise for Under Seige....then condemnation for ODG.........quite a flip in views and I'm sure it surprised Seagal to see how they turned on him so harshly(really was uncalled for in my eyes)...

Yes, it's great when an actor does a role with an important statement like in The Patriot,On Deadly Ground,Fire Down Below...but the public does not want to hear the truth. They want to live in fairy land when they go to the movie theatre-thus movies like that aren't hardly made or hardly cared for.

Go figure, all they want is violence...Steven tries to do something good, and gets no credit for it...That's why I adore him so, because he stands up for what he believes in, and he cares about the important things...I remeber him saying that people just want entertainment, no messages allowed! Oh well, I got the message, and I care...And Steven, if you are reading I want you to know that I think you are a most amazing man, and I adore you, always! :)

Oh...dumb people...they don't like to move their brains...A movie is an art and it should porttray the reality in an ironic and allegoric way...There should be messages and remindings that our whole lives ain't just an entertainment, that there's something we should think of and care about...What for me I'll never stop watching movies like ODG,FDB and The Patriot...I think that people are simply too much afraid of the truth, afraid to see what they've done.

Excuse me friend, I think you're the one round here who wants deleting, if Steven were here he'd erase you with one swift move, permanently!!. Your vibes are negative, get yourself in tune with Steven's spirtuality and karma, or get lost.

The man is a living legend. The greatest.

Nobody beats me on the message board...
