Katate Tori

Greetings Everyone,
This is a little new to me so forgive me if I make any faux pas. My question is: If Uke throws me a straight punch, will I be able to take a Katate Tori, or will that not work because Uke's fist is closed? and if this is true, than which imobilization is best to defend against a straight Punch?

best defence...

... don't be there!

In Aikido one trains how to move, more then anything one trains how to move off the line of attack. After that you can do whatever that is appropiate for the moment.

Last time I was attacked, a guy suddenly came at me with a straight punch. I moved to his inside (usually I would prefer the much safer outside/backside) ... he fell... his friend then came in a similar fashion but with a straight kick... almost the same thing... same result (almost, I had to save him from falling with head first), he fell on top of his friend. I called police... they came and listened to the story (and witnesses)... they asked me if I wanted to press charges on the guys... I didn't.... end of story.

Concensus: I moved off the line with my hands up (if nesessary I could protect myself if a second attack came) barely touching him... he falls by his own momentum and surprise of missing the target. If he wouldn't I would be in a position to do something within the aikido repertoar.

Concensus 2: Train, train and and train still more....

Welcome, Beyond Hope.

I'd go with what Jakob has said, if I were you. Basically, because there are too many variables that can take place, such as speed, timing, intent, & power that can't be accounted for in theory, it's too hard a question to answer with words alone.
Practice with your Uke, and find out what will work and what won't, that is the best way.

Best of luck

I think they had some alcohol in their blood, not much though, but as they say: when the liqor goes in the brains go out...
They were a party of 4 and I just happend to come in their way (actually I was biking and one of the girl in the group I was about to pass accidently managed to throw her sweater over her shoulder just as I came...) I lost my balance... faced the girl... she was about to say she was sorry... but her friend just went at me from behind (I sensed something and turned around and the rest is history).
I guess the first guy just flipped and wanted to show off in front of the girl(s) and his male buddy, but I really don't know.

It was just one of those days... My birthday... my fiancey were out of town... and I had to work... I was late to meet my buddies for a beer... and then that happened... well I had to call them to say that I was going to be at least an hour late...

Stay out of truble....

Hi, good eveninig, Aikilove, I was very happy with your atitude, a real akidoka, don`t request for violence, O`Sensei development Aikidô has a way for meet harmony of the universe. Aikido senses the danger avoid him. The responsability of the martial artist is great, because we know thing`s another people doesn`t. But you can`t try a irimi nage with your uke for practice against a punch. Your body will know what to do, japanese way is to observe, and training a lot every day a little bit.

I'm a Brazilian, I live in a small city in the state of São Paulo, near Ribeirão Preto, I train aikido there, it's great, recently I bought Kisshomaru Ueshiba's book the Spirit of Aikido, and I bought a tape of Hiroshi Isoyama Sensei Seminar in São Paulo in 2000. He was one of Seagal's Senseis...

So Why we don`t speak in portuguese will be lot easyer, don`t you agree.
