U.S. official: Arizona nuclear plant may be target

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A Bush administration official said that recent intelligence indicates that the Palo Verde nuclear power plant near Phoenix, Arizona, could be targeted by terrorists.

However, another U.S. government source said the intelligence is uncorroborated and has not been deemed credible. But officials are taking any such threat seriously, according to the source.

With events unfolding in the Iraqi crisis this week, the U.S. government raised the national terrorism threat alert level from yellow, or "elevated," to orange, or "high." Orange is the second-highest level in the nation's five-tiered, color-coded threat alert system.

Jim McDonald of the Arizona Public Service Co. said that National Guard troops were dispatched to protect the Arizona plant Tuesday afternoon. The National Guard was not deployed during two previous periods of the orange alert.

McDonald declined to comment on the intelligence information. But he said, "We do take all of this very seriously and the plant is very well-protected."

McDonald added that the company is coordinating with Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, the FBI, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Department of Homeland Security and other agencies.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesman said, "The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI have been working with state and local officials to take appropriate actions to address this threat information."

The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, about 50 miles west of Phoenix, has three reactors and is the largest power plant in the country, according to the Arizona Public Service Co. It has generated 30 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in each of the last three years.

It supplies power to Arizona, Southern California, Texas, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah.

Amos,

I would gladly adopt you but am not sure you would be
too much better off in Houston, if you stayed at my house
you might be okay. But my office is right by the Port
of Houston, possible target, and not far from the Chemical
& oil plants.

Amos,

You don't want to come to Dallas. We have the Glenrose nuclear reactor just southwest of us. I guess your out of luck in Texas. Spot probably wouldn't like to move anyway. He saves his traveling for Hallarian.

I'll adopt Spot

And Amos you can stay at my clinic and wash instruments while Spot and I travel. I should warn you that I am just a few miles from a US army post and an US Air base targeted by North Korea for a first strike. Don't worry. They probably need practice hitting what they aim at. Start packing Spot but update your Rabies, Smallpox, Typhoid and Tetanus shots for travel.

Amos I would offer, but I am afraid my parents would say no way...They are very reculsive, yep...They are weird! My mother has an inferiority complex about her house! But the main reason is cause my dad is ill and he is always lounging in the living room...We also have no guest room, our 3rd bedroom is soley for the computer, there is no extra bed....But I Hope you and spot find a comfy abode where you will be safe, let me know if you are ever in the area and I will visit with you, maybe over a cup o' tea at the local diner...Ummm, wait...We don't even have a diner out here...LOL...We are really in da boonies!

Amos, hey bro :) when I get back home in a week or so you're always welcome to stay at my place, although that might not be much safer than where you're at now. (Since I'm only across town from you) :) I wouldn't spend my time worrying to much though, the security around that place is rather tight since Sept. 11, 01

Well I guess that's all for now, I have a lot to do to get ready for my trip back home.

Take care all.
Respectfully,
Rev.Dean
