Mama - this is common in the military. While in the military, you have no identity other than as part of a killing machine. Freedoms civilians enjoy are not recognized in the military - for purposes of cohesion and discipline. This is why they all dress alike, have the same haircut, and share the same showers, among others. To have some that are different would create discipline problems, and saftey problems in this case. This particular subject of the petition has more issues involved than personal rights.

I know we all favor such rights, but in the military we have to recognize that we have to put our rights aside in order to complete a mission, even if it means not being able to where a christian cross in a predominently muslim area in the Middle East, where they look for reasons to kill americans.

One good thing is that one doesn't need to know someone is even practicing...Faith is deep in the heart and mind...No-one can take that away from anyone...Especially at times like these faith is very important so I do understand why these people running the petition are upset...Unfotunately, religious tolerance is not a common thing, in those countries especially...Sad but very true...Peace will only prevail if we ALL learn to be tolerant and accepting...I only hope that day comes much sooner than later for the sake of all beings...

Casey,
I have to agree with Lotussan on this one. Faith is something that is deep within. This policy is a matter of safety for our servicemen stationed in the middle east.
I read that petition and I don't understand the section about the U.S. Constitution says we have certain rights no matter where in the world we are. If you choose to go to visit another country (not talking about our servicemen), you don't have the right to force your beliefs on the place you visit, yet the petition says you do.
My brother-in-law is a special ops Marine CWO who went over a couple of months ago. He was one of the first to go to desert storm and one of the last to come home. The last email his kids got said he may be months before he can email them again. I wish it hadn't come to this war, but I'll damn sure show my support for him and all those who serve to keep us free. Sadam should have been out of power after desert storm, but no one had the nerve to do it. Maybe now people will think twice about killing Americans. They know someone is going to come after them.

Not that I agree that they're practice should be oppressed, not at all, I believe in freedom of religion...I am just saying that technically practice can't be stopped....

It's a safety thing for the military.

However, wouldn't it be great if all the world leaders and all the people of the world would wake up one morning realizing that any religion or mode of worship stems from and returns back to One Source? (whatever "name" our human minds put to It) ... then there would be no battles over "my religion your religion" ...

They showed a clip on the news of a military unit praying over fallen comrades...I'm waiting for someone back home to throw a fit!
