Yesterday I rented "Ticker", starring Steven Seagal, Dennis Hopper, Tom Sizemore, Jaime Pressley and Nas. Please keep all sharp objects out of my reach until I recover.

I thought this would be a nice opportunity to laugh at Nas' thespian misadventures, but sadly he dies in the third scene. His "emotionally charged" death scene is quite comical, but after that comes 90 minutes of stupefying boredom. This movie is not funny-bad, it is lapse-into-a-coma-bad.

Nas, I heard you chastising Jay-Z for perpetuating a negative image of Black men in "State Property", and that's cool. But what do you think it does to our self-esteem when you play the loser who gets shot in the first ten minutes? I feel devalued.

There's actually a commentary track on this thing, and I've never heard a director so disinterested in talking about his own film (certainly understandable in this case). He makes a brief comment once every 5 minutes or so.

odd tidbits from the commentary:

Seagal is "very close" with Chilli of TLC, and got her to be in the movie as a personal favor.

One scene in a blues bar has an all-star band featuring "Gatemouth" Brown, Billy Preston, and the great Ziggy Modeliste of the Meters. Evidently Seagal is a would-be blues guitarist and wanted to jam with these guys, so he made them put this scene in.
