the prairie ghost

Although they live at altitudes above 3000 metres (9900 ft.) where oxygen is scarce, the American pronghorn antelopes (a.k.a. "the prairie ghost") can achieve a top speed of 100km/h (62mph) - second only to cheetahs - and can run at 60km/h (37mph) for as long as 40 minutes in such an environment. For comparison, a thoroughbred racehorse will probably win the Kentucky Derby if it can maintain a speed of 60km/h for 2 minutes!

You're expecting a baby, and everything is in place if something should go wrong: health insurance, home insurance, life insurance. How about biological insurance? Vancouver's Lifebank Cryogenics now offers new parents/exactly this, giving them the chance to freeze their baby's umbilical cord - containing the all-important stem cells in the umbilical blood - in case that child needs fresh immune-system cells to fight off leukemia or some genetic disorder.

Blood stem cells from the umbilical cord provide an alternative to painful bone marrow transplants. But scientists are on the brink of a host of new applications - such as using stem cells to repair heart tissue or to create insulin in diabetics - which add to the value of the frozen cells, since they are viable for at least 15 years. Lifebank is one of six stem cell banks in Canada, is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks, and has just under 3,000 cords in its vaults. The cells are collected right after birth, with no risk to mother or child, and sent to a storage facility, where they are frozen at a controlled rate until they reach -150°C.

Alberta is the only province so far to set up a free public cord blood bank where donated umbilical cells from across Canada are on deposit and made
available as needed. The difference with private banks is that the cells are stored exclusively for your child or family, ensuring an exact or, in the case of siblings, close genetic match. However, the security comes at a price: $1,000 for the first year at Lifebank, and then $125 annually for storage. An extra insurance cost for those first, already expensive childhood years, but one that could well be worth the premium.

I found the article on the free public umbilical cord blood banks very interesting. I'm sure many people aren't aware such places exist. I didn't know there was a private bank, though, guaranteeing storage for a particular family. I've seen many families with more than one child with the same genetic disorder or disease and can appreciate the possibilities in that.

Good article, yudansha--thanks! :)

'Weird Al' Yankovic attacked by green moths.

DU QUOIN, Illinois (AP) -- Things got hairy for parody singer "Weird Al" Yankovic as a flock of unwanted fans rushed onstage during his performance at a state fair in southern Illinois.

Green moths swarmed Yankovic, some nesting in his trademark long curly locks.

"My band asked me if I could find a concert where we would be attacked by insects," Yankovic told his audience Wednesday at the Du Quoin State Fair. "I said I would see what I could do."

Yankovic didn't seem bugged by the uninvited guests, though, as he plugged along with songs and costume changes during his self-described "rock and comedy multimedia extravaganza" to support his recent album, "Poodle Hat."

Not too much of a suprise, but still interesting to know ... (Reuters reporting)

Average Motorist Spends Two Days in Traffic Jams

The average U.S. motorist spends 46 hours each year or nearly two full days stuck in rush-hour traffic jams.

An annual report on Tuesday by the transportation institute at Texas A&M University found Los Angeles to be the worst U.S. city for congestion, based on 2002 federal and state highway data.

The average motorist spent 93 hours sitting in peak-hour traffic in Los Angeles compared with, 67 hours in Washington and 50 hours in New York City.

Traffic delays have more than doubled since the early 1980s as more vehicles have packed an aging highway system in large and fast-growing metropolitan areas.

Motorists wasted 5.7 billion gallons of fuel idling in traffic, the study showed.

The annual financial cost of traffic congestion as measured in wasted fuel and lost productivity is estimated at more than $63 billion, compared to $14 billion two decades ago.

The average cost per motorist was $829 per year, up slightly from 2001.

You might not have know THIS (a couple of recent studies ... recent?)

Study finds older boys are bad influence

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Parents who forbid their daughters to date older boys may be on the right track. A study published on Thursday finds that teenage girls who associate with older boys are more likely to smoke, drink and use drugs.

The survey of 1,000 teens found that friends do influence behavior, or at least reflect behavior, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University said.

"We found a tight connection between teen sexual behavior and dating and teen risk of smoking, drinking and using illegal drugs," said CASA chairman Joseph Califano, a former U.S. secretary of health, education and welfare.

The study found that 58 percent of girls who had boyfriends two years or more older drank alcohol, compared to 25 percent of the girls who dated boys their own age or not at all.

Fifty percent of the girls who went for older boys or men smoked marijuana, compared to 8 percent of the other girls, and 65 percent of these girls who preferred to date someone older than themselves smoked, compared to 14 percent girls who stuck to younger boys.

The survey found that 45 percent of the teens said they had been to parties where alcohol was available, 30 percent had been to at least one party where marijuana was available and nine percent where cocaine or Ecstasy was available.

But teens welcome their parents' guidance on these issues, the survey found.
Asked in the telephone survey what they wished they could "honestly discuss with parents at dinner," 42 percent said dating and 30 percent said substance abuse. The survey had a margin of error of three points.

Study: Older runners improve faster

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (AP) -- Runners over age 50 improve their performance more quickly than younger runners, a Yale study found, reinforcing past research on older athletes and the benefits they get from exercise.

"You can maintain a very high performance standard into the sixth or seventh decade of life," said lead researcher Dr. Peter Jokl.

The 16-year study of top runners in the New York City Marathon found that the average times of older age groups improved more than the average times for younger age groups.

The top women runners aged 50 to 59 showed the greatest improvement, running the marathon as a group more than 2 minutes faster each year from 1983 to 1999. The top male runners in that age group improved about 8 seconds each year.

The study reinforces the notion that many older people grow weaker not simply because of age, but because they do not use their muscles as much as they did in their youth, said Jokl, a professor of orthopedics at the Yale School of Medicine.

Researchers expect older runners will continue to improve over time, as they try new training techniques and as American culture increasingly encourages older people, especially women, to exercise.

You do not have to be a marathoner to see the benefits either, Jokl and other researchers said. Regular exercise of any kind helps lower cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure, keeps weight down and improves mental outlook.

June Norman, 58, of Milford, said she has seen many benefits from her exercise regimen.

She has been running for 25 years and tests herself in the New Haven Road Race each Labor Day. On Monday, she ran the 20-kilometer race 5 seconds faster than she did the year before, to finish second in her age group. Her times overall have stayed about the same since she hit her 50s.

"I'd be interested to know why. You would think you would get slower or drop off quickly," Norman said.

She said she trains conservatively to avoid injuries and runs competitively twice a year for fun.

"I certainly feel a lot healthier than some of my friends," Norman said. "There is life after menopause."

Norman grew up in an era that discouraged women from exercising. Sweating or being muscular was thought to be unladylike, noted Daniel Perry, executive director of the Alliance for Aging Research, a nonprofit advocacy group in Washington.

"That earlier generation suffered from disapproval. By and large, femininity was defined as not being active in the playing field," Perry said. "Since the 1970s and 80s, girls have been encouraged and well thought of for being active in sports and exercise."

Even so, while many people know about the benefits of exercise, few are doing it, Perry said. A survey of baby boomers by the Alliance for Aging Research found that only a third of people born between 1946 and 1964 exercise regularly.

"The baby boomers are still being a little lazy, particularly the younger ones," he said. "If they all fail to get healthy, the country will be in dire straits."

Dr. Kerry Stewart, who teaches clinical exercise physiology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, said the Yale study mirrors findings he and other researchers have done on the athletic performance of older people.

A study of exercise training in people 55 and older found they can see the same amount of improvement in muscle strength, oxygen consumption and other benefits as people in their 20s and 30s.

"It proves the point that if people remain active, they certainly can get the full benefits of training," Stewart said.

Jokl's study was published in the August issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
