Welcome, Shadowman. Aikido can be a martial art of devestating power, and like most arts, does enable students to improve self control. This is due to the fact that the student of aikido must first learn to defeat the enemy within, i.e- ego, anger, hatred, negativity, etc. Most of all, aikido teaches how to become a better human being, and to become in harmony with all things. I sincerely hope that you choose to begin the journey on the path of aikido, as i am sure it could give you what you seek, as it has me and many others. Good luck, my friend.

He who conquers others is strong, but he who conquers himself is mighty.

Best to all,
Dragonking.

Welcome to the board, Shadowman.

I've been practicing aikido for almost two years now (you can read about my progress in my aikido thread here. It's been a fascinating voyage of discovery for me, as I hope it will be for you.

Good luck!

Some days are better than others, Heather. Perserverence/grim determination is sometimes all that gets me through a class. Because of my arthritis and what it is doing to my vertebrae (spinal stenosis - the bone is growing inward and squeezing my spine), I know that I will probably end up in a wheelchair in my (older) old age, so for the time being, I am enjoying the freedom to move.

Hello Shadowman,

IMHO, if your looking for self-control, you should already have that from your training over the last 9yrs. In those years you should have learned to follow instruction, listen when told, bit your tongue when you have felt like saying something inappropriate for the training session, and become disiplined with your training. If you have done these things, or something like that, you have control of yourself. You just need to transfer that from your training, to your life style.

Aikido is good, but really all Martial arts should teach control of your emotions to either degree. Aikido is like other arts, you WILL find those with huge ego's, and those with little. Give it a go, and see where it takes you.

Good luck.
