Lord of the Rings Exhibition
BY JAY RAMKI
J.R.R.Tolkien’s book “Lord of the Rings” has caught us all in the battle for Middle Earth. The compelling trilogy and the eternal triumph of good over the forces of evil has had many of us on the edge of our chairs. The movie brought to life the characters, Hobbits, trolls, Orcs, Gollum, dwarfs and trees by an astounding display of creative talent and technology and won 11 Oscars.
The success of the film has inspired the development of this exhibition by Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. The exhibits have already been on display at the Science Museum in London in January 2004. They are scheduled for a run in Museum of Science, Boston in August 2004 followed by a show in Sydney.
The traveling exhibition has a collection of props, costumes, and the exquisite jewelry worn by the cast. Orc mask, Hobbit feet, armours and weapons used by Aragorn, Frodo, Gandolf, Arwen, models of Sauron’s Tower are all a part of this stunning exhibition. The exhibition also strives to explain the use of digital technology and scaling effects in the film. This shows how people are made to look larger or smaller in the film and also many special effects that are portrayed.
