Question for all you game-playing guys (and gals)....

I need some suggestions, please. I have two nephews, 16 and 17 years old, for whom I would like to buy a game system and a few games. I have little to no knowledge of either and would appreciate your opinions as to what these guys might like.

- What type of system do you prefer....PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, or any others?
- What are some of the games you like?

I guess they're pretty average teenagers. They're cousins in different homes, so I can either get the same system for each or a different one for each. Might it be better to get the same so they can exchange games?

Any help and input would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

I ain't familiar with any of the new game systems..games themselves is what is the most expensive. I might suggest going with the newest version-that will be around the longest :)

Thanks, Amos. Good idea about the newest version, even though I don't have a clue as to what that might be. I'm hoping some of the guys around here have played on multiple systems and have a personal preference.

You can't go wrong with the most popular,PS2 so i'd go for that. Ask Fox and Glimmer about the best games though!

For you, anything! If you're still unsure either get help off the assistant or look at the games chart. Any of the top 10 will probably do.

Okay, being a youth of that age and having several friends who have those systems...

Game Cube: is made by nintendo, it's geared towards more kiddy games but some are pretty challenging. So if they're like an idiot man child and easily amused get them that. base line: Cheap!

Playstation 2: It's the oldest of the three, it has alot of different games. It's sort of has gritty darker games, but it also has good racing games and games with plots. It can also play DVD's, but I've noticed it's not that reliable if you're not really careful with it.

XBox: Microsofts attempt to garner the Console Market. It's the newest I believe, it's got nice clear graphics. It's got quite a few games, you don't need to buy memory cards and stuff. So it might be cheaper than the PS2. You can also make your own soundtracks for games too because it's basically like a really good lap top lol...but I hear the DVD on the Xbox sucks, but it's a game system first and last...lol

And if you're lookin' to save cash, the PS2 and Xbox if you have skills you can buy chips and burn games and stuff so you can rip off the fat monsters that is industry...but I'm not suggesting doing that...lol

Thank you very much, Sleeping Fox. That was an excellent breakdown for a "game-challenged" person such as myself. I went to two different stores last week and they were so busy I couldn't get anyone to help explain the difference. I was hoping for your opinion, as I've seen a few posts from you and Glimmer about various games, and I appreciate it.

Since I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest, it sounds like maybe the Xbox might be the way to go. One of them had mentioned something to his dad about being able to make his own soundtracks, so that would tie in with this. Thanks also for the tip on this not needing the memory card, as I wouldn't have known any of them needed one. And I believe these guys do have the skills to do the stuff you're "not suggesting". :D

Thanks again,
Serena.

Well the Con Men at the game stores would try to take you for everything they could. Be firm with the little dick wods.

And with the PS2 and Xbox, the also have online capabilities. So they can play with each other from a different house if they have the same game or with other people 'round the world.

Glad I could be of some help. I don't like it when people get ripped off for stuff they didn't really need to buy in the first place.

Good point about assistants having self-interest Fox. I'd still go for PS2 as X-box and it's games may not last. Serena, the ability to play dvds(and cds) is a big plus unless they already have one set up in their room.
Ps.If you can get pirate games,do it. It's all a rip off!

well the PS2 has been out for quite some time, Soney isn't going to pump anymore money into as per they're developing a ps3 so they say.
Xbox is fairly new, so atleast you can look forward to some insurgences of developement before they move onto an xbox 2....
Microsoft aint Sega, they'll last longer than the dreamcast...some spoiled brats have both ps2 and xbox

Whats with everyone being so against the video game industry? I don't think the games are a rip off, companies spend millions to make them. Paying $40-50 doesn't seem to bad to me. You can even get games on the greatest hits line for $20.

Sure they spend a lot to develop them, then make x10 profit! It wouldn't hurt to make them more affordable.Same goes for dvds.Fox,humorous as ever.

Hi Serena..You have left a message for the greatest gaming guru in gaming history..ME!!

Sleeping fox's break down was good, but I'll add..

I've been playing games for the last 35 years(give or take a year or two), and I can tell you that by far the PS2 is the better buy..
At the listing price of $179.99 you the system,a controller, and the network adapter(to be able to play games online)..It's a damn good deal..Plus the Ps2 has the greatest game library, since it's backwards compatible(meaning it plays the older Playstation games)..It also plays DVD's..If you do purchase this sytem, take it upon yourself to pick up a memory card..

Gamecube right now is the cheapest of the 3..it's selling for $99.99, which is a great deal..The games are geared more towards younger kids.

X-box is by far the most powerful system on the market, but the games it produces aren't anything to praise about..

I have all 3 systems, so I'm telling you this from someone who knows..

I say go with the Ps2...

As for games..Go for Grand Theft Auto(but beware it's rated mature)
Socom2
Castlevania-Lament of Innocence
SSX3
Smack down-here comes the pain

May I also suggest picking up the latest Video game magazine(gamepro,EGM,PSM), they will give you a comprehensive list of the years best games..

good luck on your decision..

Thanks very much for your terrific breakdown, Mr. Opinion. I'm glad you read this before I went shopping this weekend. I had planned on going ahead with the Xbox, but now I'm strongly leaning towards the PS2. I guess you really are an expert if you own all three systems!

- They both have the older PS and many games, so that's a plus.
- I think they'd both like the ability to play games on line. I assume you meant that the adapter comes with the system? If not, I will purchase it separately.
- I guess the ability to play DVDs is also a plus, but I can't remember if they have a DVD player in the home already.
- Thanks for the tip on the memory card. Sleeping Fox had also pointed that out before, which I had not been aware of. I know nothing of these. Do they come in different sizes? If so, should I get one big one or several smaller?

Thanks for the game suggestions. I will get those, plus they're absolute hockey freaks (well, we all are, coming from Michigan...Detroit Red Wings, you know!), so I'll see what they have along those lines.

Great idea on the video game magazine. That, plus the memory card, will make good stocking stuffers (yep, I still make stockings for all 10 nieces and nephews, as I have since they were born).

Thanks for your great suggestions, Mr. O. I appreciate the time you took to post these.

Thanks again, Sleeping Fox and Storm, for your helpful ideas as well.

Hell he's got me convinced lol.
Yea if you get a ps2 be sure to get those memory cards, they're important, they save the game. they're all generally the same, many companies make them, they have digital ones but you don't really need those, they're about the size of cracker lol.
Happy Shopping!
btw if I ever have to pick teams in hocky, it's The RedWings!!!!

Yeah Serena, that's me,twisted! They NEED eating looking like that. You know when they do a magic trick and prance all around the stage for ages before doing anything,THEN set the tiger on them. They'd do something then.Really,i don't belong on this thread as i don't know **** about all the latest games etc.Young pups like Fox are more informed.
Storm,not so knowledgable..
