Shambhala Warriors and Buddhist Holy Wars

Dear forum members,
Since Steven Segal, a committed Buddhist, contributed so much to action movie genre, I am wondering is (as strange as it may sound) if anybody has more information about holy wars in Tibetan Buddhist and monk warriors, even though Buddhism is the most pecaful religion among other world religions. I read somewhere that Tibetan monasteries had small konastery armies and that the Shambhala prophecy was used not only for spiritual perfection but also to unite Buddhists against Muslim and Chinese invaders

I recall Bertrand Russell wrote that many people assume otherwise, but that Buddhists have indeed engaged in holy wars--though I don't know whether Russell was really an expert on the matter. I can say, however, that Buddhists are not known for engaging in warfare. Afghanistan, for instance, was once a Buddhist country, until Muslims slaughtered them all and destroyed almost all of their art and relics.
