FOR those of you who don’t already know, Steven Seagal is a movie star who has appeared in big-budget American movies like Under Siege, Out For Justice and Hard To Kill, but more recently you may also have experienced Steven Seagal And Thunderbox…

During his 20 years playing action-hero roles, Seagal has jumped from speeding cars, Karate-kicked his way through locked doors and fought off ruthless mercenaries. These days, the slightly overweight Buddhist is faced with an equally challenging mission - to entertain and win over theatre audiences across the world.

He arrived on stage trailed by his five-piece band and immediately the number of guitarists signalled this was not going to be a sit down show! Steven (aka, Mojo Priest) started the blues fuelled set with the funky-as-hell Love Doctor, which received a lot of love from the excitable crowd.

Gravely

On Alligator Ass there were traces of melancholy in his deep, gravely voice. Steven then invited the female audience members to the front of the stage, before launching into She Dat Pretty, which was followed by BBQ. Both songs sounded even funkier than on the Mojo Priest album.

Steven left the stage towards the end of Gotta Quit That Chick, while his superbly talented backing band carried on for a few more verses. And that was it.

He came back onstage with his guitar and was greeted with rapturous applause. “Here’s a little something from your country”, hollered Seagal - in a mock southern accent - before performing an excellent version of Wild Thing by The Troggs.

Seagal is sometimes criticised for his lack of crowd participation at shows, but he was extremely witty and engaging last night, with most of the audience leaving the auditorium with big smiles on their faces.

Much energy,
