Okay its time for a Jet Li thread! All discussion about Jet Li & his movies is going to take place here.

I would like to start with some reviews from Danny The Dog Aka Unleashed.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

http://jetli.com/gfn/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15679

Sat Jan 08, 2005 5:45 pm - I saw DANNY THE DOG !!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just saw Danny The Dog at the first screening in Paris!!!

Since the event is quite big here, Jet was there with Louis Leterrier
(director) and Steve Chasman (producer, Jet's manager)... So we
had the great chance to see the movie first and then to have Jet
coming in the theater to answer people's questions. No need to
tell you that he was extremely welcome: I thought my ears would
explode when he came in!

As for the movie, I didn't know anymore what to expect since it
was so long to come out. And it's a very good surprise! Not only
the movie has amazing action, but the character development is
also very good, especially as far as Danny is concerned.

As you might know, it's about a guy who has been raised like a
dog by a gangster and who discovers human feelings through
music after meeting with a blind musician (Morgan Freeman) and
his adoptive daughter (Kerry Condon).

Since it's a Jet Li movie, I guess you all wonder how the fight
scenes are... Those who loved the movies he made before he
came to Hollywood will be happy to see this great martial artist
back on screen! You guys can forget the Joel Silver things with
intrusions of stupid shots showing DMX during Jet's fights: here
Jet comes back to true fight scenes, with long and dynamic shots,
where Jet can use his art through Master Yuen's great
choreography! Moreover, those fights are extremely violent, we
can feel Danny's rage while he attacks the guys he is supposed to
kill, we can hear the bones cracks when his breaking arms or legs.

The filming, the editing, the speed of moves, everything reminds
the best of Hong Kong action.

As I said, Danny The Dog is quite violent sometimes, but this
violence is not here just to serve the action scenes. Danny is about
to discover emotions through music, and there is such a big contrat
between the fight scenes and the moments Danny spends with
Sam and Victoria, which rely on simple things, that it was actually
meaningful to such a rage before.

As for the acting, again he surprised me a lot. I liked his
performance in Hero, but his character was quite introvert. And
apart from Hero, his recent movies were not really the ones
when we saw his acting skills. Here he is doing a very good
performance on playing this lost and innocent character who
awakens to emotions. Besides, the chemistry with Morgan
Freeman and Kerry Condon, who are both great too, is perfect.

red rat's review (minor spoiler) : Posted: Tue Jan 11, 2005

"Actually it's more like that. Just came back from the premiere in
Paris and I was surprised by the level of violence in it. Definitely R
rated material though maybe the US will have a toned down
version if the MPAA thinks it's too violent. You have broken bones,
bodies smashed with axes, hammers.

The first fight Jet literally fights like a dog, fans have never seen
him fight his opponents with such rage. At the same time it's not
a movie about violence but more like how to live a life without
violence. Morgan Freeman plays the usual wise man but Bob
Hoskins shines as the vicious uncle Bart, the baddie everybody
loves to hate.

Oh the final fight is ten times better the KOD final. There is an
awesome moment where they fight in the small space of a toilet
that all we watch again and again. All in all the movie all hardcore
Jet fans were waiting for since he left HK for Hollywood. It's
definitely a buy on DVD. Despite its violence, it may be the first
date movie Jet has made in his career, except for Bodyguard from
Beijing. The final image when Jet cries will make your girlfriend
weeps in her seat."

and Caroline's:

"Hehe, Jet Li fans, you've never seen Jet Li like that in a movie,
trust me.

Danny the Dog will bring tears to your eyes, it's a serious match
for the best of what he's done in HK. To me it's his best part since
Wong Fei Hung, it is indeed of that caliber. Plus the fights are
absolutely terrific, incredible, DEADLY. Yuen Wo Ping and his team
surpassed themselves (euphemism).

The chemistry between Jet and Morgan Freeman is pure magic,
my friends ! And Kerry Condon is definitely an actress to follow.

So far the feedback is more than excellent over here. Even long
time Luc Besson's enemies are amazed, lol."

Jet Li “Unleashed” Review from Mediocre Hollywood Fare

Filed under: China Watch— admin @ the wee hours
Now if only Jackie Chan can get a new agent. In Unleashed, Jet Li plays a modern day slave who, as described at Ultimate DVD, “has lived his whole life without any sort of normal human education, with the mind and personality of a young child, with only one lesson learned: how to fight. Treated like a dog by his owner/boss, Bart (Hoskins) which includes having to wear a collar, Danny has been raised to be a lethal fighting machine who fights in illegal gladiator-style fight clubs, where he earns lots of money for Bart as the undisputed champion. After a car accident that lands Bart in a coma, however, Danny meets a kind elderly blind piano tuner (Freeman) on the run because he knows secrets some bad guys don’t want known, who uses music to teach Danny some things about the world and about being human.”

Hmmm… Morgan Freeman as a blind piano tuner (named Sam, if you wanna read any Casablanca references into it)… well, Morgan’s cool. It’d be fascinating, though, to stretch the actors and have Morgan and Bob swap roles. It’s got that Hollywood 5 minute pitch description, but Luc Besson was on the screenplay and the director, Louis Leterrier was in on Astérix & Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre, which starred French comedian and undisputed king of one-armed actors Jamel Debbouze (y’know, the grocery guy in “Amelie"?) and cut his teeth as a production assistant on Alien: Resurrection. Check out the previews and the clip… first preview has Massive Attack in the background. And of course, French subtitles. Hey, it’s gotta be better than “The One".

Note: although Jet Li is treated “like a dog” in this film, it’s not to be confused with the Jon Voight/Chevy Chase movie Karate Dog, which had “Unleashed” as a subtitle. And I think I can safely say I can skip that movie. Because it’s about a dog. Who knows karate. Voiced by Chevy Chase. Think he’s trying to compete with Bill Murray after “Garfield"?

Filmforce: Unleashed.

Preview the upcoming Jet Li-Morgan Freeman flick.

September 24, 2004 - We have an exclusive look at the trailer for Jet Li's Unleashed for ya today! In a recent interview with IGN FilmForce, Li called the film "a different kind of martial arts movie."

Li's character, Danny, has lived his whole life as a slave and has no adult education. He told us, "My character is mentally only ten years old, but physically fares well. He can beat up a lot of people in a few seconds. But he doesn't understand life. He doesn't have friends, he doesn't have family. ... So I meet Morgan Freeman's character. He's a piano tuner and he [introduces me to] music. And his music brings me back. [Helps me] become normal person. I feel the friendship, I feel the love, I feel the family. And I become a normal person. That is the whole story."

Wait! What about the martial arts? Rest assured there's plenty of that. Danny had been cruelly raised by his master, Bart (Bob Hoskins), to be a fighter in illegal fight clubs, where he makes a bank as the undisputed champion. When Bart is incapacitated after a car accident, Danny is taken in by a blind piano tuner (Morgan Freeman) who is being pursued by some bad guys after learning a dangerous secret. And that's where the fisticuffs come in!

Louis Leterrier (The Transporter, Asterix & Obelix) directed the film. Luc Besson produced and co-wrote the screenplay with Robert Mark Kamen (The Transporter, Kiss the Dragon, The Fifth Element).

Unleashed.

Are you still producing and writing with Luc Besson? Yeah, we work with Luc. We’re working on another movie, come out soon, next year, beginning of next year called Unleashed. In Europe they call it Danny the Dog. Also it’s a special martial arts film. It’s very unique. Morgan Freeman and Bob Hoskins costar. My character [is like] I’ve never played before. He’s mentally only 10 years old, but physically he’s very strong. He grew up very dark, around darkness. He doesn’t understand life, friendship, family, love, anything. He doesn’t know. He just acts like a dog. So Morgan Freeman, his character is a piano tuner. Really funny, right? He plays piano and through the music, he brings me back. I become a normal person, understand and start feeling the friendship, start feeling trust, honor, everything.

So at the end of the movie, he’s a normal guy. It’s a very unique story. It’s not a tough man saves the city, tough man saves the day. I want to talk to the audience, especially younger audience because the past few years making movies in the states, I think I need to say something. Because usually, they say, “Jet Li, kick butt, kick ass, yeah!” Things like learning martial arts, well action movies only give the information to kick somebody’s ass, beat somebody up. But I want to tell them if you’re physically very strong, if you don’t understand friendship, family, love compassion, what are we going to be? We’re just dogs. Just like a machine.

Kiss Of The Dragon.

I am watching Kiss Of The Dragon right now. Here is a review:

KISS OF THE DRAGON
Rating: C+

Jet Li - that's some kind of dishwasher detergent, right? No, wait, that's Jet Dri. Never mind then. Turns out Jet Li is a person, and one badass dude at that. I'm not kidding - don't get on this guy's bad side. In addition to neckbreaking kicks, punches to the jugular, and all that good stuff, he also knows all the right spots to stick acupuncture needles to completely immobilize an opponent (or worse). I do hope he uses sterile needles.
What starts out looking like an understated crime thriller (i.e., a movie with some vestige of a plot) rapidly devolves into standard-issue chopsocky. When the entire plot of a film is summed up by a character in three lines of dialogue, it's usually a sign the writers aren't disciples of Shakespeare. Basically, we have Li getting framed for a murder by a corrupt French police inspector (Tchéky Karyo), and in the process learning about the famous French hospitality toward foreigners. Fortunately for Li, the French seem about as good at tracking down fugitives as they are at building automobiles. Added to the mix is Bridget Fonda as the hooker who's really just an innocent victim of her circumstances, and whose real motive is just protecting her young daughter. I'm beginning to wonder if there are any prostitutes on the street who are actually in it for the money, and who can grasp the apparently complex concept of birth control. You might figure that as long as they're going to have Fonda in the movie, they might as well capitalize on her pretty face, and plaster it on the screen at every opportunity. Instead, she spends nine quarters of the film made up like the lead singer from The Cure. Go figure.

Whenever I see one of these kung fu action films, I'm always reminded of a skit on The Benny Hill Show where a martial arts warrior encounters a bear in the woods. On cue, the bear adopts a kung fu stance, and the two proceed to exchange karate chops. The point, in case you didn't get it, is that every person in these movies always seems to be a kung fu expert. I bring this up because there's a scene in this film where Li stumbles into a martial arts classroom, and engages about thirty guys in hand-to-hand combat. I'll give director Chris Nahon the benefit of the doubt, and assume he deliberately included this scene as a joke on the genre.

This movie's saving grace is the skill with which it delivers the fight scenes. Many action films are marred by hyperactive editing which makes it nearly impossible to follow what's supposed to be happening on screen. Although there's some of that here, too, for the most part the fights are choreographed well enough that director Nahon lets them simply play out in front of the camera. This is particularly true in a later scene, where Li battles two blond muscleheads in an exciting confrontation. Li himself gives a good performance, particularly since he has little dialogue to work with and must convey his emotions through facial expressions. Some of the best scenes occur between Fonda and him, where she uses her uninhibited sexuality to penetrate his one vulnerability: his sexual modesty. Now if only she wasn't made up like a raccoon...

If director Nahon could stand to learn one thing, it's that he uses too many bullets. I'm sure the mechanical effects guys love him for putting their kids through college, but every time someone grabs an automatic weapon in this film, the scene heads straight down the dumper. In his next film, he should challenge himself to make the entire movie without a single gunshot, and see where the added demands on his creativity take him. In the meantime, there's enough good action in Kiss of the Dragon to keep it interesting. And we even find out at the end what the title has to do with the rest of the movie. Talk about breaking with tradition.
