I just read that the Oscars are still on..

HOLLYWOOD, March 21 — The gang will all be there on Sunday, according to Oscar insiders. Rampant speculation on Thursday painted a portrait of a hemorrhaging Oscar show, but honchos at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences laughed off most of the rumors. Despite talk of a wave of defections, most of the participants — presenters as well as nominees — have called to confirm their attendance, academy executives said.

Among the hottest rumors floating around were that the show would be held Sunday, but ABC would delay its airing. Another rumor had it that the White House phoned the academy to ask for a postponement.

SO FAR, ONLY Will Smith, Peter Jackson and Angelina Jolie have bowed out. Academy officials said there are last-minute cancellations every year, but the exits are being exaggerated because this is the first year most people are paying attention.
The Academy Awards ticket office said this week’s cancellations are not much different than in past years.
Among the hottest rumors floating around were that the show would be held on Sunday, but ABC would delay its airing for several days. Another rumor had it that the White House phoned the academy to ask for a postponement of the show. The first rumor drew a sigh and a “definitely not” from academy officials; the second rumor evoked a laugh with the denial.
Juice: Will stars send doubles to Oscars?

With the bombing having started Wednesday night and the networks carrying around-the-clock coverage of the war, it’s possible TV viewers will be ready for the Oscars.

A group of celebrities have opted to wear peace pins to the ceremony. Dustin Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Jim Carrey, Ben Affleck, Michael Moore and Kirsten Dunst will be wearing Artists United to Win Without War buttons attached to their garb, which is predicted to be less flashy than usual.
Others are said to be planning to wear peace doves or a piece of duct tape, recalling the government suggestion to employ the utility tape to seal up rooms in the event of a biological attack.

MOST PARTICIPANTS ALREADY IN L.A.
As for travel fears, the bulk of Oscar telecast participants already are in town at this point. Many New York-based film companies said their top brass are either heading to L.A. or are already in town for the Oscars.
Harvey Weinstein and senior Miramax execs made the trip midweek; Focus Features co-presidents David Linde and James Schamus were bound for the coast on Thursday, with Killer Films principals Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler also en route. Bingham Ray and other UA execs also are in L.A.

Most companies report there has been no modification of plans for talent expected to attend Sunday.
An exception was Aki Kaurismaki, whose “The Man Without a Past” is Finland’s first contender for the foreign-language film Oscar. Kaurismaki penned an open letter to academy president Frank Pierson, saying, “Cinema should live, but this chance should also be given to Iraqi civilians — children, women and men.”
Tom Bernard, co-president of Sony Pictures Classics, which distributes Kaurismaki’s film, said the director had never planned to make the trip to L.A. Both Bernard and SPC co-president Michael Barker already are in town with an Oscar contingent led by “Talk to Her” directing and screenplay nominee Pedro Almodovar.
Jolie had changed her mind last week before the fighting broke out in Iraq.

HOOPLA TONED DOWN
While the event is still a greenlight at this point, some of the surrounding hoopla is being toned down.
On the West Coast, the Hollywood Black Film Festival — the largest black film festival in the U.S. — was to kick off next Tuesday, but is rescheduled for June 3-8.
“This is a critical moment for our country, and at this time the nation’s focus should appropriately be on the escalating conflict in the Middle East,” festival founder and executive director Tanya Kersey-Henley said Thursday. Kersey-Henley also hinted that a common fear of travel among participants played a part in the decision to delay.
In New York, the academy and the mayor’s office jointly decided to cancel a ceremony marking the Oscar runup.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg had been scheduled to make a proclamation at Le Cirque 2000 Friday morning, coinciding with the delivery of two 8-foot-tall Oscar statuettes. The statues traditionally are dropped off at the boite a few days before the academy’s New York Oscar-night viewing party at the restaurant.
Sunday’s festivities are still scheduled at Le Cirque.
Even so, Oscar is still being honored. For the first time in New York history, the Empire State Building’s crown will be lit in gold throughout the weekend in honor of the 75th Academy Awards.
As for other Gotham Oscar fetes, most are going on as planned. Organizers behind the Entertainment Weekly-hosted viewing party Sunday night at Elaine’s say the event is still expected to draw a capacity crowd of New York glitterati and industry leaders, who will file up the red carpet for cocktails and dinner starting at 6 p.m.
“I wish I had a crystal ball to predict what Sunday night will be like, but we’ve had no cancellations and we’re very excited about the terrific response to the event,” said Entertainment Weekly spokesperson Sandy Drayton. “We’re in a very different position to the big events out in L.A. because ours has always been more low-key.”

In other war-related showbiz news, soprano Angela Gheorghiu and tenor Roberto Alagna canceled their remaining performances of “Faust” at the Metropolitan Opera because of the conflict in the Middle East.
The husband-and-wife team left the U.S. after Monday night’s performance — their fourth in the run — according to Met spokesman Francois Giuliani. “They had war concerns and terrorism concerns,” Giuliani said, adding that they felt their presence was needed “for their children in France.”
