Downtown Gets Another Martial Arts Center
News Brief

The Osaka-based Tenshin Dojo, a martial arts training center once headed by action movie and martial arts star Steven Seagal and founded by his mother-in-law, has opened a Downtown outpost. The new facility's founder, Kentaro Tak/-Seagal, who boasts a black belt in aikido, is the actor's son. Located in an 1,800-square-foot loft at 409 W. Olympic Blvd., unit 609, in South Park, Tenshin had a soft opening in February and is in the process of gathering students and creating a permanent class schedule. So far the center has attracted students mostly from out of state or areas beyond Downtown, including West L.A. and Riverside, said manager Yin Tak/-Seagal. "Now we want to let people in Downtown know we exist," she said. "It's really good for women especially, because you can learn to protect yourself." Tenshin is the latest addition to a growing number of Downtown martial arts facilities, joining the recently opened Piccinini Training Center, also in South Park, and the Arts District's Boxing Academy Los Angeles and The Yard.
