ADMITTING he is a big fan of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Hollywood action star Steven Seagal came all the way from Japan hoping to see her.
"You know, I've never met her (Ms. Macapagal) but I think my impression of her is that she's very straight up, very sincere and honest, and (a) really talented president. I hope she gets reelected," he said in an interview with Malacañang reporters, a day after he planed in from Japan.
Seagal said he has been following Ms Macapagal since she became president in 2001.
"I've told my friends in America that I like her. And I have lot of friends who have always told me that they like her and so even though I've never met her, I feel that she's very good," he added.
Seagal, who arrived Sunday night, had wanted to see the President. But Ms Macapagal's prior engagements prevented the meeting. He is scheduled to leave on Tuesday.
Asked if a movie actor like him would make a good leader of a country, Seagal said, "I know governors can't."
The actor's response drew laughter from newsmen. He was referring to his fellow actor Arnold Schwarzenegger who was elected governor in California.
"I don't know. (Former US President Ronald) Regan was a pretty good one. But I think it really depends on the situation. I don't mean to take sides but I'm a pretty big fan of the President at the moment," Seagal said.
A frequent visitor to the Philippines, Seagal promised to come back with the prospect of doing a movie.
He refused to discuss his new project with the media.
Tourism Secretary Roberto Pagdanganan and pro-administration senatorial candidate Richard Gordon met Seagal.
Gordon said the actor's mere presence in the Philippines showed that the country was safe amid the continuing threats of terrorism.
"The very fact that he (Seagal) is here speaks volume for our country that we have become safer, that people are beginning to look at us now as possible film location area," said Gordon, a former tourism secretary.
