For the cynics among us

I came across this recently and it gave me pause. See what you think.

---------------------

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds. "What does love mean?"

The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined.

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love."
Rebecca - age 8

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth."
Billy - age 4

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other."
Karl - age 5

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your french fries without making them give you any of theirs."
Chrissy - age 6

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired."
Terri - age 4

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK."
Danny - age 7

"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss."
Emily - age 8

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen."
Bobby - age 7

"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate."
Nikka - age 6

"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday."
Noelle - age 7

"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well."
Tommy - age 6

"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore."
Cindy - age 8

"My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night."
Clare - Age 6

"Love is when mommy gives daddy the best piece of chicken."
Elaine - age 6

"Love is when mommy sees daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford."
Chris - age 7

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day."
Mary Ann - age 4

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones."
Lauren - age 4

"I let my big sister pick on me because my Mom says she only picks on me because she loves me. So I pick on my baby sister because I love her."
Bethany - age 4

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you."
Karen - age 7

"Love is when mommy sees daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's gross."
Mark - age 6

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget."
Jessica - age 8

Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child.

The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.

When his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry."

thanks

If you enjoyed that, then I strongly recommend watching "Kids Say the Darndest Things" with Bill Cosby. very entertaining

Thank you, TD. I really enjoyed that. I must be getting soft in my old age, eh? :) And I loved the contest with Leo Buscaglia. I've followed him for years on PBS and even read a few things by him.

And Yudansha--I don't mean any offense by this--but I liked this, but don't care for "Kids Say the Darndest Things".

Now what do you suppose that means? :D

tora no; :=)

Tora I wasn't being insulting. You might not be familiar with the show; but Bill Cosby is a well known comic hosting the show "Kids Say The Darndest Things." He asks the kids questions of a wide array. I bet that 'love' question was mentioned at one point of the show's running days.

Maybe I should have introduced the show first; sorry for the misunderstanding then.

Interesting response, if dismissive. Not exactly the one I was expecting, though; when I read this, I didn't look at this from the point of view that children say the darndest things (I never did like that show, because kids on that show kids didn't say the darndest things, they said the stupidest things, and were not the least bit cute or clever because they were mugging for the camera), and no, this wasn't taken from that show at all.

Why I posted this topic under general spirituality and not as a humour piece under Off-Topic was because I thought the responses of the children were interesting, how different they were from what adults might say if asked the same question. They were describing what they saw as an external expression of love (that an adult would probably never see or even acknowledge), while an adult, for example, would describe love from an internal or self-centered point of view. ("What I want, what I feel, what I get".)

I did, as a matter of fact, find that having something that I thought was quite beautiful and very touching reduced to the crass commercialism of a television show that has nothing whatever to do with either the actual content or the intent (ref: the forum I chose to post this in) was, if not insulting, certainly insensitive to what I was hoping was going to be a serious discussion about the nature of love.

However, I grant that this is a point of view thing; what one person may find moving, another may not.

Carry on, then; let's see where this goes.

-TD, who has not seen a lot of love in action and thought that what the children said spoke volumes more than anything any romantic writer ever wrote on the subject

Footnote: the kids who shovelled the snow for Serena are a perfect example of what my original post was all about.

Interesting you mention that, TD. I thought of them also as I was reading this. :)

sorry for unintentional 'insult' (say cheese, or baloney whichever makes you smile)

TD I don't check where you post your threads. I just saw your thread as a recent one, read it, and remembered the show. If you can't find Bill Cosby funny, well then I don't know if you should read my 'Laughter' thread (then I would not recommend it for you). "The Kids Say The Darndest Things" was meant as a form of entertainment (not for you to think about why the kids are saying the things they do) just like America's Funniest Home Videos (same principle).

I see your point, but you wanted a serious response, and I was not feeling very serious at the moment, so a comedy show came up that reminded that for me. And if you watch all the episodes I bet you would find Mr. Cosby posing that question to the kids (since you didn't like that show you probably haven't watched all of the episodes, so you wouldn't know for sure). But I do believe that you did not get the contents of your thread from the show. I was just showing you a parallel to that.

Unfortunately humour is not a basic sense.

Where in this statement is an insult? It isn't there.

some support always helps

Thanks purplelotus, I was a little disappointed at people for taking that as an insult. This is not about taking sides or what not, it's about sensitivity and hormones because those two sometimes get in the way of rational thought (now see, that can be insulting; but be mature for a second and reread my posts on this thread, and you might get a better understanding).

Because you see, I am not the only one to see a humourous side to the point of the thread.

I also can't see why Yudansha's reply was offensive.Perhaps I am missing something? Then again,I don't know why my thread in the 'Nasso sentenced' thread was edited either,so what do I know!

TD,remember:you can't expect people to think like you do.The fact that we all have our own sense of humour(for better or worse) is what makes people individual.

Peace,
Leon

Agreed.
But,like TD already mentioned,it was supposed to be a "serious" post.I just guess TD was a little surprised at the replies of a few people? How people interpret things differs vastly from person to person.Even so,it's still their opinon at the end of the day.

Peace,
Leon

Look at me,I didn't even know it was posted in the general spirituality section!I wonder how much of us noticed this?Maybe Yudansha didn't even realise?Just something to think about.

Yudan,
Many years ago there was a television show called the "Art Linkletter Show"!
It was a variety show, of sorts. But on this show was a small segment called
"Kids Say The Darnedest Things"! Art Linkletter ask the questions and the children gave him their answers. It was hilarious!!
Bill Cosby, God love him, brought it back and I am so greatful that he did!

TD,
Thank you so much for your post! I loved it!!
God bless,
Mama san
