Hapkido, What you think?

Hello everyone! This is my very first post but I'm glad to be here, I've always been a big fan of Seagal as well as many respected martial art greats..The closest Aikido school to me was 30 miles or so, but that didn't discourage me. I'm opted to look into Hapkido (the blending of Aikido, TKD, and Judo appealed greatly to me) under Master Billy Lee 5th Dan (35 years,Hapkido Brothers Academy). Today I approached the dojan but no one was there but he returned my call on the spot once I called. His approach was very pleasant as he believes in truly learning the art rather than making money as a school and giving out a belt to individuals and in some cases they don't know how to defend themselves. He focuses his teaching to help enrich the individual themselves; I always loved the no water down aspect and it pleased me to know he'll teach Hapkido as it is meant to be teached; students used his teachings for streets, as well as the FBI and Military.. I would like to know what everyone thinks of this art since Aikido is out of my option.

If you have the right attitude, any martial art is good for you.The Hapkido is very complete, in my opinion a taewondo-aikido mix.

Although after 15 years of practising I´m backing to the roots...Nowadays I think the simplest move...the best move.A fast puch is better that all the circular Aikido stuff. And to be in the best shape you can, training with lifts and cardio workout, combining with the boxing and some aikido techniques.

But the shape is basic. And to practise Hapkido well you must be or get in very good shape.

I just thought i'd mention that I practise Aiki-jiyu-jutsu, a mixture of aikido and ju-jitsu, it is wonderful and I also find it very complete. It is workable and I think the aikido aspects work very well, just like a fast punch. Open hand slapping can be just as effective though, and less painful!

Thanks everyone for the welcomes! As for you JSwales it sounds good; Aikido and Ju jitsu it's a great mix :). What i like as well is that Aikido and Hapkido both have the root art of daito-ryu aikijujutsu; very similar if you look at all three of course; great arts to take up! :)

Yes it is excellent, there is a mixture of traditional aikido, such as locks, grabs and bone-breaking, plus throws and projections from ju-jitsu. I never miss a lesson! I like the sound of this Hapkido, i'll definetely have to give it a try.

Well both Aikido and Hapkido come from the same root art as I stated before; Hapkido includes kicks as well and many throws; you should try it! Today I'm off to observe a class at the local dojan :)

Hi,
I bought a video of hapkido andfind it very interesting and complete. I study yoseikan budo and realised that some techniques are similar (maybe because of the same origin in aikido I think).
I think that a combined martial art is better than a single style, first of all because it gives you the opportunity to discover many possibilities to move your body and react to an attack. In particular i like very much the tehniques in hapkido, aikido, aikijutsu, yoseikan budo, etc.. when we use circular moves to neutralize an opponent.

sorry for the bad english

bye bye

Sounds like fun! I went to observe a class today and it was terrific; a wonderful atmosphere at this Dojang and i found out the internet outdated the instructor's ranking. He's a Grandmaster at 8th Dan; all students helped each other and i easily see values being shown and encouraged in the dojan. Everyone assisted each other and no one ever forced me to join. First class is Friday most likely! I'm excited! :)
