Hi, bittenbinder, and welcome to the site. Thanks for the link. Here's the article.

Mink joined the A Band Apart roster in March of 2002 after several years in the music video industry‚ both as a director for various urban artists and several years of production experience as a protégé of director Hype Williams.

mink has directed videos for artists including Master P‚ C-Murder‚ Lucy Pearl‚ the West Coast Bad Boys and many others. mink came to A Band Apart from Geneva Films located in Hollywood where he directed a steady stream of videos for Master P and Priority Records‚ Grammy Award winner Raphael Sadiq and also Lucy Pearl’s breakout video “Without You.” Prior to joining Geneva Films‚ mink was on the roster at Santa Monica-based A Few Miles North Productions‚ where he directed projects for Sheryl Crow‚ Supreme Beings of Leisure‚ South Central Cartel‚ Face 2 Face and Veruca Salt.

Prior to directing videos himself‚ mink worked closely with directors Hype Williams and Paul Hunter in a variety of production capacities with artists ranging from Busta Rhymes‚ J-LO‚ Madonna‚ Janet Jackson‚ Lenny Kravitz‚ Jay-Z, TLC—over 250 music videos over the course of three years. mink got his start in production as a post production and visual effects supervisor on feature film projects including “Starship Troopers,” “Die Hard III,” “Cable Guy,” and others.

Since coming to A Band Apart‚ mink has directed videos for tracks by artists such as Boniface and Daniel Bedingfield and is currently working on new promos for 2003.

TD,he is very respected in the music video world & is quickly gaining cult status. He wants to cut his teeth in action movies, see his previously released stv action film 44 Clip debut, and what a way to start big with our boy Steven.Do you honestly think the film's production would let just any young Tom,Dick or Harry direct?Mink brings with him respect, enthusiasm and a lot of attitude.Don't you even think of writing Mink off yet.

Peace,
Leon

But I guess the article doesen't mention Steven...
I am sure it might be pretty cool with mink directing, at least we know he does
his job often, there is something to be said for experience of any sort, so who knows...

music videos

Many action directors started out in music videos: Tony Scott, Michael Bay and Simon West all did and they all went on to make some great action films.

Two words. Michael. Oblowitz.

As for Mink, well, let's just say the proof's in the pudding. I'll believe he's a good action movie director when I see the results. An untested director in the area of features working with an actual script with actual actors is a far cry from directing music videos, is all I'm saying. Some have made the transition, as Steve has pointed out - but what were their first efforts like? Good? Bad?

I'm just saying that a director whose experience in making films lasting less than 5 minutes doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in me, when even those with experience give us rubbish.

On the other hand, he can hardly be worse.

And Rob Zombie, don't forget about ol' Zombie. Although I wouldn't consider House of A Thousand Corpses to be action so much as it was trippy coolness iced over with bundles and bundles of delicious gore and tasty sacreligious imagery.

Mink is just gonna give his cool, urban, fresh edge to the film.He has worked with(dare I say it)rappers in the past so don't be surprised if at least one rap star turns up in the film ;).I know he is big friends with Buster Rhymes,oh...that's it,that's it...no more tallk of rappers...I don't want to tempt fate:D

come get some
Lots of decent directors started in music videos, IIRC David Fincher to Antoine Fuqua are a few more names.

I'm with you on this. Directing a music video is very different from an action film. Tony Scott may have made the transition, but I think his films suck. They tend to be cold and souless and the action is poorly conceived. Look at the big shoot out in True Romance! Rubbish! This would have been great if someone who really understood action (like John Woo) had done it! And please, nobody mention Top Gun, one of the most over-rated films of all time.

Unfortunately, because Seagal's current films are low budget, they will be used as a testing ground for new directors.

At least Unleashed has got Ringo Lam at the helm (according to IMDB). Although his Van Damme films were poor, some of his Hong Kong stuff was excellent. See "Full Contact" for an example!

You are spot on there! Two excellent directors. Let's hope that Mink can make the transition as well as these two did.

Music directors

Well a lot of what's been said is true but Michael Bay and Simon West both did well with their first films Bad Boys and Con Air which were both great films. Sorry to disagree Richie but I think Ringo Lam's films with Van Damme have been amongst the Muscle from Brussel's best films, In Hell in particular was a great movie which is doin extremely well despite little or no publicity. I've seen City on Fire but I'd go out on a limb and say his English-speaking efforts have been much better. As for any old Tom, Dick or Harry directing films yes folks Michael Oblowitz proves anyone can and they (together with Ticker) have been Seagal's only less than excellent films. I wish the Out Of Reach trailer would hurry up and surface!
