Ethiopians residing in the U.S.A.
celebrated the 1st anniversary of the "Little
Ethiopia" on November 23,2003 the day on which Fairfax
in Los Angeles was designated, the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs said.
Ethiopian traders, youths, Africans and Americans
organized the anniversary festival, a press release
sent to ENA yesterday quoted the Ethiopian Embassy in
Washington as saying.
Over 5,000 Ethiopians, Africans, Americans including
film actors, Los Angeles Congress members, and
journalists have attended the festival.
Congress member, Mervyn Dymally said on the occasion
that he would do his level best to strengthen the
trade activities of Ethiopians in Los Angeles.
He lauded Ethiopians' efforts for cementing the
existing relationship between Africans and Americans.
A renowned film actor, Steven Seagal said on his part
that he has a special admiration to Ethiopia's history
and culture.
Seagal said he would contribute what he could to the
growth of Ethiopian art and culture.
Los Angeles Times in its news story issued on November
24,2003 under the headline "A common Ground in African
Heritage" said the festival of "Little Ethiopia" was
very successful in the sense of creating solidarity
between black Africans and Americans.
The event was celebrated under the theme "cultural
awareness and social responsibility."
Los Angeles has formally recognized its culturally
unique place Fairfax' by granting it the official
designations "Little Ethiopia"
