On the History Channel's, Boys Toys special when they showed the segment of Seagal's sword and guitar collections. They introduced Seagal and gave a brief history of him about the Martial Arts. Then in the interveiw Seagal studied Aikido, Karate-Do, Judo, Kendo, and Ju-Jitsu.

Does anybody know with whome Seagal studied Japense Ju-Jitsu under and what his ranking is?

Yes, how I said in another thread Seagal studied brazilian jiu-jitsu with the Machado Bros. and their own grappling system to make the ground fight scene of Under Siege 2

The guy wich Steven fights in the ground of the train is one of the Machado brothers.

Chuck Norris did the same for Walker Texas Ranger

I saw pictures of Steven with them.Sure you can find in the Machado´s web or maybe in the gallery of this site

Steven was intelligent, in Aikido there aren´t grappling techniques.

See you

Yea Latino, I made the thread about Seagal training with the Machado's. I know he trainined in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu briefly with the Machado's, but he said he studied Japanese Ju-Jitsu in Japan which is different from the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I wanted to know what rank he was in Japanese Ju-Jitsu and whome he studied under. ;)

Are you sure he said japanese JJ?

That's what he said in the recent interview he gave yesterday on the History Channel.

I was surprised myself Aiki, that's why I made this thread. ;)

He said he studied Judo, Kendo, Aikido, Karate-Do, and Ju-Jitsu all while he was in Japan.

I assumed he studyed ****o-Ryu Karate-Do under Fumio Demura in California, but he also stated he studied some Karate-Do IN Japan as well. ;)

Perhaps....

Well, Steven has been always a little bit lier, you know, the CIA, mafia and all that stuff.

I think he was showing off.I don´t believe all the things he said, I believe all the things I see he does, and all the facts about him are proved.

Karate, Kendo, Aikido...to black belt, yes, a little of judo and ju-jitsu,????, but not at the same level.

I saw that History Channel thing too Little, but other than BJJ, I do not beleive that he has studied traditional jujutsu to a great extent. I think he dabbled in it during his stay in Japan but did not attain dan ranking in it!!!! And honestly, couldn't tell ya who he studied with.

Ok thanks Tenshin. I believe he studied it a little and briefly, but not long enough to achieve any ranking.

He studied BJJ just a little, I believe just with the Machados when they were on the set of Under Siege 2 and nothing after that.

You are correct. Only during US 2 did he do the BJJ thing, but he still incorporates thatinto his movies, which I think is cool and interesting!!

True. In the fight scene in The Glimmer Man, the last one when he was fighting that bald head guy, when he was thrown against the table he went straight to the guard. So I am glad he learned some stuff from The Machado's.

Yes, very good technique. Does Chuck Norris still train with them, I have heard that he does, and has incorporated BJJ into his routine?

Tenshin Chuck Norris still trains with the Machado's. Chuck Norris incorporates BJJ in his style Chun Kuk Do. As a matter of fact he said his instructors have to have a strong knowledge in BJJ to even be an instructor for him.

Chuck Norris has a Black Belt in BJJ as well as Bob Wall and Richard Norton all under the Machados.

Hello Friends,
One thing that intrigues me about Steven, is that when I watch "path beyond thought" I see him do techniques that are right off the boards of my Dojo. I study Dan Zan Ryu Jujitsu. One example, is where he takes hold of Uke's sleaves and slides his butt between uke's feet while hooking his ankles around uke's ankles and tosses uke from his back.We call this throw "sumigaeshi" it is a brown belt nage te. There are many more examples.
I definitaly think Steven has studied Jujitsu.not just dabbled.
much respect

Beyond Hope,
Why? because he did a throw that looks like something you do? Let me tell you a secret... We do it to! It's called aikido.

Aikilove,
You said what I was going to. Not sure why because something that "looks" like another styles techniques are often seen as not Aikido. So that everyone else knows, Aikido came from Jujutsu (Daito Ryu mainly) however O'Sensei studied many styles. Many things that look like moves from other styles are also included in Aikido. I do think Seagal has only dabbled in Jujutsu.

Hello Aikilove and Tenshin,
Perhaps I should stand as corrected. I made an assumption (not the best thing to make). I made this assumption because some of the things I see on the film don't just "look" like Traditional Judo/ Jujitsu techniques. He does them perfectly. Another assumption I should not have made is that just because I havn't seen an Aikidoka do Sumigaeshi, doesnt mean it is not an Aikido technique. Is it that any Budo Technique can be Aikido if Nage harmonizes with the attack?? Is it not about which technique you do, but rather how you do it that makes it Aikido??
After Steven throws uke sumigaeshi,Uke pops up and charges again, Steven crouches very low and kicks uke's feet out from under him, as if his leg were an iron broom, sometimes called Ashi Garami.
My ignorence comes from not having seen the Aikidoka, that I play with, do anything close to this kind of kata.(We are at a more basic level.) I have a lot to learn and will more carefully weigh my opinions before I post in the future.
Respectfully,
Beyond

I had already seen a interwiew with the Machado´s on tv here in Brazil almost a year ago and Machado said that Seagal took some classes at his dojo in order to make some movie, the same he said about Norris.

Maybe those are the people he was talking about who beat him during the Black Dawn interview. :D

Beyond Hope,
Aikido is defined by the principles, which are trained through the basics. Therefore one might define aikido by its basic techniques.
Once these are understood by you body after years of training them, anything you do or how you move will be through this window of aikido principles found within you.
Then you can do pretty much anything. It will still be aikido to you.
