HOLLYWOOD action star Steven Seagal appeared on a Welsh stage last night in the latest phase of his new incarnation as a blues musician.

The 54-year-old actor, best known for his role in US Navy thriller Under Siege, is in the middle of a national tour with his blues band Thunderbox.

Last night, Seagal played to a packed crowd at the Coal Exchange in Cardiff, with the size of the crowd swelled by intrigue at how the actor - whose latest efforts have generally flopped - would adapt to musical performance.

But Seagal, who has recently been busier as an animal activist that a movie star, has criticised those who see his new project as a novelty act.

He said, "I told people over and over again that I've been playing music since I was five or six years old but it's like they don't hear it.

"I've never said it's my new career, I've never said I'm quitting the movie business. It's like they hear what they want to hear."

Seagal's music has received a degree of critical acclaim, with the respected Big City Blues magazine in the USA describing it as "exceptional".

His first album, Songs from the Crystal Cave, was released in 2005 and featured a duet with Stevie Wonder, while his latest offering, Mojo Priest, includes collaborations with the blues stars Bo Diddly, Ruth Perkins and Hubert Sumlin.

But he said fans should not expect his film persona to influence him on stage.

He added, "I come over here to play music and all anybody wants to talk about is how they thought I was going to swing on stage from a chandelier with an Uzi and explosions.":D

Much energy,
