When Dr Richard Onslow Lawes and Kanyarat (“Fern”) Dechraksa tie the knot on Saturday, it won’t be your ordinary Thai wedding. It will be a wedding “made in Hollywood”, judging from what I’ve heard.
For Ric is the “Big Boss” of Location Thailand, the only authentic and original annual production directory that gives you all the statistics and information on all aspects of movie-making in Thailand. With people flying in from around the world, movie producers, designers, stuntmen and even the gaffers will be present at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit’s Grand Ballroom for the wedding.
ML Siddhichai Jayant, former head of the Thailand Film Office, will be Ric’s representative at the cocktail party beginning at 6.30pm. Friend David Robinson has organised a seven-piece blues and jazz band featuring with the “world’s best sax player” for the night. “I’m just calling up a few favours,” says Ric with a smile.
Marc Van Sanden, set builder extraordinaire and the man who did some design work for Oliver Stone’s “Alexander”, will be laying out the place like Hollywood with themed food stations depicting some of the best known movies like “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Chicago”.
Word has it there will be film stars, politicians, government people, professors, stunt guys, directors and producers and many more.
“The band,” says Ric, “will play as long as people will dance; so it should be a hoot.” There will be some “entertainment” adds Ric, but he can’t give the details away.
Also, video cameraman Simon Grome from “Shoot Asia” will output on digital for Ric and Fern, so the happy couple are in good hands. Good times and a rare opportunity for those who would like to bash me, as I have also been given an “offer I can’t refuse” to attend the wedding. You see, I prefer to lead an enigmatic life like Thomas Harris. However, I would never get a US$5.2 million (about Bt208 million) contract for two books like he did for “Hannibal” and a yet-to-be published book, most likely titled, “The Lecter Variations: The Story of Young Hannibal Lecter”.
By the way, I heard that Thailand Tattler and The Big Chilli want to do a special on the wedding. Who knows, Steven Seagal is also staying at the Sheraton Grande at present while filming his next movie and it appears the hotel may just be the “in” place to be that evening.
Apparently Living Films snafued the “Sniper III” movie project up in the North. Yes, Tom Berenger went away happy with the crew but hated the production company. Payments, they alleged, were also not forthcoming ... yet again! Is it something they believe they can do here in Thailand. This time it was squarely on the shoulders of Living Films and not the US. officials Seems they wanted to increase their margins.
Proving that promotion of the television and motion picture industry is multi-faceted in the ways it can benefit Thailand – which very much includes the tourism and hospitality business – the Hard Rock Hotel in Pattaya recently played host to some international movie biz names.
Accompanied by producer David Mense, two international executives in the film industry – one from the US and another from Holland – discussed multi-million dollar future movie projects suitable for shooting in Thailand.
Both are epic features. One is based on the novel “Harem” and is soon to be released internationally. Set in India hundreds of years ago, a location which Thailand can easily replicate, it involved plans to turn the novel into a screenplay and shoot it in the Kingdom. Further news on this will be revealed as it arises.
This year, CineAsia will feature a “Production Pavilion” and “Networking Conferences”, thus offering Asian filmmakers a “one-stop-shop” industry experience.
Organised by New York-based VNU Expositions Film Group, which also manages ShoWest, ShowEast and Cinema Expo International, CineAsia and CineAsia Production will again be held at the Sofitel Central Hotel and Bangkok Convention Centre, from December 7 to 9.
Robert Sunshine, vice president of VNU, said: “With CineAsia Production, we will provide an environment where Asian producers, directors and others in the pre- and post-production industries can network and transfer knowledge interacting with key players from Hollywood, Europe and Canada.”
“CineAsia Production is being designed so that those in the production end of the business can exchange ideas and learn about successful film industry business models while experiencing the latest in filming technologies and services,” adds Sunshine.
