Very good news, Suzi, thanks. :)

It's great to see Steven's whereabouts more publicized these days.
It would appear that the media is a bit more interested now.
I bet his exposure in the Mountain Dew commercial had something to do with it. :)

I sure hope this is televised in the States!

Lionel Richie, Gloria Gaynor to headline Vietnam peace concert

HANOI May 12 - Lionel Richie, Gloria Gaynor and Hootie and the Blowfish are among the stars set to perform in Vietnam next month at a UN-backed concert to honour artists who have contributed to world peace.

The careers of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Country Joe McDonald, who were all prominent anti-war campaigners during America's ill-fated involvement in Indochina, will be formally recognised at the June 22 World Peace Music Awards.

Organisers said Wednesday that Country Joe would receive his award in person but they were still waiting to confirm the attendance of Dylan and Baez at the five-hour show at Hanoi's National Stadium.

Baez is synonymous with the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 1960s with her anthem ``We Shall Overcome''.

Matt Taylor, the show's producer, said the World Peace Music Awards were aimed at ``promoting peace throughout the world through music'' and honouring the artists at the forefront of this goal.

The late Vietnamese composer, Trinh Cong Son, whose peace song ``Lullaby'' was a hit in Asia in 1969, will also be honoured. His sister Trinh Vinh will accept the award on his behalf.

American folksingers Peter, Paul and Mary, and Harry Belafonte, the New York City-born actor, author and singer, are the other recipients, but only the former's Peter Yarrow will collect his award in person, Taylor said.

Among the musicians from 25 countries set to perform at the free concert are former Police guitarist Andy Summers, British soprano Sarah Brightman, Thai pop queen Tata Young, Taiwanese diva Ah Mei and Indonesian rockers Slank.

Hollywood action-hero Steven Seagal is also due to attend.

The concert, which will be opened with a message from UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, will be televised live around the world.

Parts of the proceeds from merchandise sales will be used to help victims of Agent Orange, the defoliant used by US forces during the Vietnam War.

The first World Peace Music Awards was held last year on the Indonesian resort island of Bali. - AFP

"world Peace Music Awards Cancelled !!

Taken From "Hootie and the Blowfish" official Site:

"WORLD PEACE MUSIC AWARDS CANCELLED
According to The Associated Press, the second annual World Peace Music Awards has been cancelled. The concert that was scheduled to take place in Vietnam on June 22nd was said, by its organizers, to be cancelled due to "insurmountable circumstances completely beyond our control." Artists such as Gloria Gaynor, Lionel Ritchie, Hootie and the Blowfish and the Black Eyed Peas were expected to perform at the biggest international concert ever scheduled. The concert, supported by the United Nations, was expected to honor musicians like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary for their songs that spurred the anti-war movement in the United States during the Vietnam War. "

I am not sure but we'll see tomorrow !!

Thanks for the news, Suzi. Here's a different article from the Associated Press. It's unfortunate that it was canceled. It was a great idea.

World Peace Music Awards canceled
Vietnam show tribute to Bob Dylan, others
The Associated Press
Tuesday, June 15, 2004

Hanoi, Vietnam — Organizers of the biggest international music concert ever scheduled in Vietnam have canceled the event less than two weeks before the show, but it was unclear why.

The second-annual World Peace Music Awards had been set for June 22 at Hanoi's National Stadium, with well-known artists including Lionel Richie, Gloria Gaynor, Hootie and the Blowfish and the Black Eyed Peas expected to perform.

Chief Executive Producer Matt Taylor issued an e-mail Saturday saying the concert, organized to honor artists who have devoted their lives to promoting world peace, had been called off because of "insurmountable circumstances completely beyond our control."

Taylor wouldn't elaborate Sunday on what happened, saying only that the cancellation had nothing to do with the communist government in Hanoi. He also offered his apologies.

"We feel extremely saddened for the Vietnamese people," he said by telephone from Mountain View, Calif. "They have worked so hard, but at the end of the day, it's not anybody's fault. It's not a lack of will on anybody's part."

The Vietnamese government had approved the show and was involved in organizing it. Taylor said it still was possible to reschedule it later this year.

The concert, supported by the United Nations, was intended to honor musicians including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary for their songs that spurred protest in the United States during the Vietnam War.

Twenty-five artists from around the world were expected to take part with some proceeds benefiting victims of Agent Orange, the chemical defoliant the U.S. military used during the Vietnam War.
