Belly Of The Beast

This is Steven Seagal's latest motion picture. This movie is released on region 1 dvd on 31st December 2003 and region 2 dvd on 16th February 2003. This thread contains important information on the release.

Budget: $14 million

Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Plot: Ex-CIA Agent JAKE HOPPER has run a successful private security business since leaving the agency when his wife died, leaving him alone with daughter, JESSICA.

While hiking in Thailand, Jessica and her friend SARAH are kidnapped by an organization that calls itself the ABU KARAF. Sarah is a US Senator's daughter. For ransom the Abu Karaf demand the release of 20 prisoners from American custody. The US Secretary of State urges restraint - he won't negotiate. An ex-colleague of Jake's recognizes Jessica on the ransom tape and tips him off. Jake knows he must rescue the girls himself.

An old CIA buddy puts Jake in contact with 'LEON WASHINGTON' an active CIA agent working in Thailand. Jake goes to Bangkok and escapes an assassination attempt by unknown forces. Leon arranges a meeting with SOKU Ð the internal security chief for JANTAPAN. Jantapan is an eccentric and scary character, a rebel military general that is making a play to be one of the most powerful men in Thailand. Secretly Jantapan is messing with some dangerous spiritual forces.

Soku provides Jake with a cover story, but the CIA wants Jake out of it - they are planning to take out the Abu Karaf with the aid of the Thai army and don't want a civilian in the middle.

Jake is a spiritual man so he contacts his spiritual master PAITOON. As Jake is in trouble, Paitoon offers to arrange a divination from the oracle of the order.

Jake enlists the help of his old friend and partner SUNTI. Together they con LULU, the girlfriend of WU an arms dealer, to steal information leading to the Abu Karaf. Jake & Sunti follow the leads to a warehouse where they discover evidence of highly sophisticated weaponry. With the dangerous drug dealer Wu now after Lulu, Jake takes her under his wing.

Jake shares some of his info with Leon - still testing the waters. Can he trust the CIA agent? Another attempt is made on Jake's life - this time Jake is sure that Leon was involved. Finally, the Abu Karaf contact Jake to arrange a meeting - the pieces are coming together.

Jake gets his reading from the old oracle. The cryptic message confirm his fears - evil and demonic spiritual forces are working against him. Jantapan tries to send the spirit of an ancient warrior demon to kill Jake but the ceremony goes wrong and the spirit enters Jantapan himself giving him amazing physical and spiritual powers.

Jake and Sunti go to meet the leader of the Abu Karaf SUNGRIT - he confirms what Jake suspects - since 9/11 Jantapan has worked to corner the narcotics and arms market. It was Jantapan who kidnapped the girls, blaming the Abu Karaf so the army would wipe out his competition. Sungrit knows where the girls are and gives Jake plans and intelligence. They both need the girls alive. With more betrayal and action on the horizon, Jake must engage in a battle that will put both his physical and spiritual powers to the ultimate test as he takes on the demon Jantapan in a wild battle that can only end in death.

Thanks, Casey...:)

And thanks for the definition, too! It is a common expression in the hindu world too, as far as I know...The hand gesture he is doing is 'Namaste' and I bow to him, for to me he is most divine, and full of light, grace, and dignity...:)

Namaste to all of you, my friends...:)

Hi:

That's an interesting thing because in Thailand we call what he is doing a "wai" a particularly graceful greeting and show of good will, usually accompanied by "sawasdee krub." In Belly of the Beast Steven shows off his Thai speaking ability and artfully greets his friend and other monks with the "wai" and "sawasdee krub."

I guess in Hindu culture they have the similar way of greeting people. When done with a smile, I have always felt it is such a warm polite way of greeting a person. I think the picture posted here is actually taken from his visit to Thailand? Does anyone know?

PS I saw Belly of the Beast and I thought it was a good show, good action, Steven seems back to his old self again, a little more animated. I don't care about his weight (since I'm a guy obviously), he still moves with a feline grace and unexpected quickness, and he is still an excellent athlete.

Someone mentioned in another thread a theory that he may have been "going thru the motions" for the last four movies just to comply with some contract obligations- maybe that's true, it seems plausible to me. Maybe now that the contract is fulfilled, we'll see a real true return to form and maybe that's why so many new movie projects are in the pipeline- it's good for him, the more the better, as far as I am concerned. Listen Sean Connery can still position himself very credibly as an action hero in a recent movies at an advancing age, so Steven, as the real thing and not just an actor, can also thrive for years to come . . . What do you think?

Hello, Ed. Thanks for your explanation on the greeting. I found that interesting.

I'm glad you liked Belly of the Beast. I also enjoyed it very much--and you're right, it is like he's back to his old self again. I like what you said about his weight, also. :) I'm a woman, though, and I don't care either. I thought he looked great.

And Sean Connery was very good in League of Extraordinary Gentleman, wasn't he? Of course, he's an excellent actor anyway! :)

I agree--I think Steven does have the potential to thrive for years to come and I hope to see many more of his movies, whatever they may be.

Good to see you posting again, Ed! Stick around. Things have been getting rather interesting lately! ;) :)

Out for a kill

We saw this film on the video last week. I think it was a very good film because of:
- not so many computer-made-effects that more remembers on computer-games
- not superstyled actors: fashion is interesting but should not be the headline in the
film
- the personality of the actor in his role is moore important that everything around
- the film-music was naturally fit in
- this is a film, that you can see moore times

Kind regards
Tine

P.S. English is not my mother tongue - I hope that I did not use wrong words

At the video store yesterday with my nephews, all 24 copies of Belly of the Beast, DVD and VHS combined, were rented out. Per the owner, he said they have continually rented out every copy since the day of release, with some people requesting to be on their waiting list. Even though they're 5-day rentals, that's got to be good news.
