Come on all aikido practitioners on the board........INSPIRE ME!!!

I need some,um,what's the word.......INSPIRATION.

For tonight,I think I have attended the Aikido class that I fear may be my last.

Believe me,I have tried to enjoy the art and to absorb the philosophy and principles of it.....................but I just find the entire process to be not as enjoyable as I had hoped it would be.

I'm just finding major aspects of the art to be something of a huge pain up the butt.It doesn't help matters considerably that our Sensei is an uptight, pompous ass*ole with a particular penchant for making my life hell or that the particular place in which we learn it is a small, cramped sh*thole in comparison with where I learn Thai Boxing the night before (where there's a much nicer teacher,by the way),but there are other, more pressing matters that are forging my present disillusionment with the art of Aikido.

For instance, the warm ups we are asked to perform at the beginning of the class. We are asked to lean backwards with one of them, whilst standing.

"Er ,Sensei...........wuh,wuh,waaaaaaaaaah".Backwards I'll go tumbling one of these days.Does your back in and all.

Speaking of which,in another one,we have to lean far forwards with one of our legs which is a major fu*king strain on the other leg,I can tell you (and I'm sure some of you know.)

And finally, the one that really irks me,is where you have to sort of grab your foot with one of either hand and sort of wiggle it about.?!?

"Yo Sensei, you ever noticed this is unhygienic?"

After doing this,of course,we have to come into psyical contact with other members of the class.God knows what potential fungei infections I could be passing on to them (and they on to me,for that matter.)

Another things I'm not found of is the forward rolls you have to perform.I know their purpose is to forge your posture for your future in Aikido, but I am really not fond of them, especially the succesion of them you are called on to perform.

It's a real shame, because for all the things I dislike about Aikido, there are things I love about it.

I love the work with the swords, for instance, the Bokken. In fact,I think I might find a seperate class for this, because I derive an enormous sense of pleasure from learning this.Unlike the aspects I've described above.

So what I'm asking is,could anyone provide me with any incentive to carry on?I'd love for next week to go back with a renewed, optimistic attitude toward learning Aikido...........but at present moment,I'm giving serious thought to jacking it in.Could anyone inspire me to continue?

In Peace and Love,

Sascha

Well I'm not a student of Martial Arts yet, but it sounds like you may have the same problem in other forms of Martial Arts. They do require stretches etc in order to try to keep from injury. Odd as they may appear-they have been done for many years & have served their purpose.
Good luck with your training

Find another teacher, if this one doesn't suit.

Or, this may not be the discipline for you.

There's risks in everything mate, but personally, I'd be more concerned about a potential hoof to the knackers rather the potential of catching a fungal infection from one of your fellow students, so, in that respect, I'd leave the Aikido class for the time being and go with the more accessible Muay Thai. As I'm sure you know, you need to stretch before any workout, be it martial arts, cardiovascular or weight training to prevent injuries. I'm sure the stretches that you are doing will become easier given time - but it sounds like you also need to develop some sort of trust with your partners in the back stretching exercises especially - if they are done properly, you shouldn't fall. Don't be such a ******* sissy anyway! As for the sword fighting - when was the last time you came across a madman wielding a sword in your local Co-Op? It all depends on what you want from the martial arts - is it for the spiritual aspects, self-discipline, self confidence, fitness or do you want to just look cool with a sword? Unless you are ever likely to face an immortal who can only be killed by decapitation, I'd concentrate on learning a more practical discipline.

Aww dont give up! i have only just started Aikido and it all seems very odd and difficult to me!

i hurt my back the first night! i fell over doing the samurai walk and i burnt my feet on the mats! however i enjoyed it immensely!
why did you decide on Aikido in the first place?

I did it because im a big fella and i wanted something that people wouldnt expect someone of my size to know! also it looks so graceful and effortless!

think back to why you wanted to do it and maybe that will give you the drive again.

whatever you decide good luck.
