Out For Justice Fan
Before I start, I must say that I am not one of those people who treats everything that Seagal as if it were gold. I like many of his films, I respect the man, but I do also think some of his films are utter rubbish (don't get me started on The Foreigner). With this is mind, I hope you'll think my review is going to be honest.
When I first played this album, I was completely shocked. This album is much better than I ever imagined it could be. I thought it would have some personal curiosity value to a Seagal fan, but I'm pleased to say it turns out to be really good! There is a real mix of musical styles, some songs are Blues, some Rock, some Reggae and even some that are Asian influenced. I thought having read on the forum that he was a jazz fan that this would be a jazz album, but that seems to be the one style that isn't included. Seagal sings on every song, and plays guitar on most . Whilst he is no Sinatra (or Hendrix), he sings and plays pretty well, certainly well enough to carry off the songs on this album. I think he sounds a lot like Sting, especially on "Goree"!
I am really surprised and pleased how good this album is. Whilst it will never be in my top 10, I will be playing it quite a bit in the coming weeks, not because of who the artist is, but because I like the music. I am sometimes a critic of Seagal's acting ability, but I have no doubts about his talent as a musician.
I do have some criticisms. He has worked hard on the lyrics, each of the songs has a message about peace, freedom, poverty or something socialogical and at times they can seem a bit the same, or even a bit preachy. The other criticism is that because of the mix of styles, not everyone is going to like every track. I personally am not a fan of Reggae and I'll probably find myself skipping over those tracks sometimes. But I suppose that is also the album's strength; there will be something here for everyone. I don't have a favourite track yet as I haven't played it enough to be familiar with it, but I'd probably go for one of the more bluesy songs.
My girlfriend came into the room whilst I was playing one of the Reggae tracks, "Lollipop", and she said "Hey, this is good, who is it". And she absolutely hates Seagal movies!!! I can't give a better recommendation than that!
Included in the box is a booklet containing the lyrics which has some shots of Seagal, musicians and some Buddhist imagary. There is also a fold-out poster of the album cover which is 6 times the size of the box, with the words "All is Love" and an autograph printed on it.
In conclusion, I'd give it 8/10. You people are going to love this album, as fans of good music as well as fans of Seagal.
