He looks comfortable with it, and seems just as happy in recent pics as he was in older pics, even given his bad Hollywood reputation and the fact that he's basically straight to video now.

I think Seagal will always be in the position where he will have both theatrical & stv releases...many A-list stars juggle between the two on a regular basis.

Hi MMCK,how's it going?

I agree. It does seem that the adoring female fans do get way touchy if you try to give any sort of constructive criticsism on the tall guy.Kinda like bees' round a honey pot!Not only does this detract from what we are saying(Remember:we are fans, too!)but it makes us look like we're downing him,not his fans anymore etc.Didn'tanyof you ever get any feedback, positive critisicsm when you were at school?

Peace,

Leon

You're not including me, I trust, as one of those adoring female fans? Because I'm the one that gets dissed by the female fans if I say anything remotely critical. I got onto being a Steven Seagal fan *for* the fight scenes, remember.

I'm not disagreeing with you in principle about the action scenes; I'm merely taking a more practical view that *things have changed*. He may be perfectly capable of doing now what he did back when - but perhaps he *doesn't want to* any more - we just don't know. The assumption that he's not doing the kick-a** fight scenes any more because of his weight could be just that - an assumption.

And, by the way, just to point this out - nothing I've said in this discussion - NOTHING - in any way resembles what you're accusing me of. I merely offered a different point of view which did not happen to agree with yours.

I prefer to think of Steven's performances in his later films as evolution. I'm not sure I want the "good old days" back, exactly as they were.

Hi TDWoj,

You bring up some interesting points there-you may well be right.

Sorry,I didn't mean to include you in the "female posse"(the're a good bunch really!).I didn't even think you were female.I thought you were a 5 foot gay midget who had a crush on Seagal :D

Peace,

Leon

I see what you're saying there TDWoj, but I don't think he's being especially coy about his weight. I think people make it an issue because Hollywood is so appearance-fixated, and everyone "has to be thin". Seagal may be heavy now, but there's no denying he carries it well. The only film where he was slim was Above the Law, in every one since then he's been heavy, but as fans we still accepted him. As I've said before, the only problem I have with his weight is if it's going to impact his fight scenes in a negative way (which it HAS done).

But I don't think he's coy about it. He doesn't seem to care about it as much as others do. He looks comfortable with it, and seems just as happy in recent pics as he was in older pics, even given his bad Hollywood reputation and the fact that he's basically straight to video now. He doesn't look like he's unhappy or shy about his weight is what I'm saying.

Maybe not in publicity shots (he was *enormous* at that Victoria's Secret book launch in February, but the Moscow pictures look like he's lost weight since then), but in the films? Actually, I think he is quite coy about it. The Glimmer Man, for instance - he's constantly hiding behind filing cabinets and papers, or, because he's wearing black most of the time, standing at a certain angle so you can't see his paunch.

In HPD, he's wearing long coats, and that loose, baggy prison outfit, so you can't tell how big he is underneath. He's photographed from cutesy angles so you can't see his double chin. In fact, you hardly even get a good look at him even in the scenes where he is supposed to fighting. All you see is a hand, or an arm (and we have to hope it's him, not his stunt double).

In The Foreigner, it's the same thing - notice he never takes his coat off, even when he's indoors? And again, he's being photographed from odd angles. And in the next to last scene, where he opens his coat to holster his pistol, just before he goes back to the cafe - that's a double, a nice, slender, svelte, flat-tummy double we see, not him.

Even as early as MFD, he's being coy about his weight - I mean, get a load of those jackets he was wearing. Talk about camoflauge....

It could be that in OFAK he's finally admitted to himself - and the rest of the world - that he's gone portly, so he - and we - will just have to live with it. If that's the case, then we should see him fight the way he used to, because *now* he doesn't care. But in the aforementioned pictures - oh, yes. He cares very much.

-TD, 'way too observant. But then, I'm one of those awful females. :D

LOL! My true identity revealed at last! Nowhere to hide now!

Actually, I have the best of both worlds, now that I think of it. I prefer the action flick over soppy romance flicks any day, but I don't mind a-tall if the action man is easy to look at, too.... heh heh heh.

-TD, female with rough edges....

Hi TDWoj.

No, I am not really including you (or Disciple) in the female members here who get a little snotty if you so much as say Seagal is a little portly. You both have responded respectively and gave your views in a non patronising way which I respect, and therefore I can also see your point of view. It just pisses me off when some of the other female admirers get out of their prams when you say something which is'nt 100% positive of him. As said before we are fans too who just happen to be a little dissapointed at his latest movie making output.

Also whilst his weight seems to affect his fight scenes, I have to admitt he actually carries it quite well and looks a hell of a lot better than other portly actors like Daniel Baldwin or James Belushi etc I also believe he has'nt really aged that badly and looks the part in the roles he chooses to play. Someone else also mentioned that his fight scenes probably hav'nt been helped by the poor directors and I could also agree with this. His weight does'nt help either like, but admittedly some of the directors he's worked with lately have been sh*te, nothing more than hacks for hire.

Finally, whilst he will probably never scale the heights of the good old days I would still pay to see his new movies. I liked the plot and story of "The Foreigner" and hope he continues to make interesting films even if they are STV. If he slimmed down and got back in the gym this would also help in my view.

Peace.

MMCK (Listing the positives as well as the negatives!)
