for 12 mil it was very good looked more like 20 million movie...also with a small budget yoiur not gonna get bourne identity type car chases as films like that cost 80-100 million so i was happy with the chase to be honest

The movie is not as bad as the cover but it's not far better than the last ones, it's a small step forward but definetly not worth to watch it second time.

Just finished watching Urban Justice, wow great movie, lots of bone breaking classic Seagal action. I will post my review later on today but I am very pleased.

Urban Jusitce and Into The Sun remain my two favorite DTV Seagal releases so far.

I think Marker is going to be even better. Can't wait!!

Disgruntled fan!
My review. Much of the darkness will look much clearer and brighter on the proper DVD. Screeners normally look darker. Don't fret too much on that count folks.

Urban Justice.

Steven Seagal’s career post Under Siege has been one in constant need of resurgence. On Deadly Ground was greeted with acid tongued derision from critics, thus followed up by Under Siege 2, an upturn, though still unfavourable in comparison to the first. Exit Wounds followed another string of poorly received outings. Then the downward spiral hit high gear with the odd (and only slight) upturn in films like Belly Of The Beast and Into The Sun. Since that time the lows have really been low and his subsequent films barely attaining mediocrity at best. In 2007 it’s seemingly a crunch moment. Seagal needs an upturn. His fan base is in danger of decimating, perhaps jumping ship to Jean Claude, Wesley or Dolph, heck maybe even Don Wilson when you consider how bad Attack Force was. Urban Justice needed to be decent, needed to hit the high notes. But did it? Well overall…it kinda did. Not to say it’s a great film by any means, but it’s an upturn in fortune for Seagal, and most importantly, the man himself really comes out of his corner throwing some big shots again. He’s not been out for the count quite yet, and with a few rounds left in him, maybe he can still turn this fight in his favour (nice analogy huh?).

Urban Justice firstly steers clear of the trend of Seagal’s post Exit Wounds flicks, and that is CIA/FBI conspiracy subplots that eat away at the pacing and clarity of his recent flicks. This plotline is simple, straight and laid out. Seagal’s son gets killed, and he wants the killer, nothing more. There’s nothing too much on the side that gets in the way of Seagal getting from A to B. Secondly the film features Seagal as prominently as a leading man actually should feature, both in screen time (some of his recent flicks have him disappear for sometimes 15 minutes at a time!) and ADR participation (no dubbing this time folks). Above all Seagal manages to bring back some of his charisma that had seemingly been left behind in the early 90’s somewhere along with Kelly Le Brocks hotness. Seagal’s cool again, he’s badass! Sure a little chunky and sweaty still, but he kicks ass! The action in this film is pretty good too. There’s a plethora of hand to hand fights, which believe it or not, actually feature Seagal himself! Yes amazing given recent history. His stand in, stunt double and ADR double sat around twiddling there thumbs in this picture, and that’s good. Seagal fans don’t want those guys too busy. The fights are pretty decent though and Seagal unleashes some pretty savage beat-downs. We get vintage moves here. He breaks every conceivable bone in the human body during this flick, a femur on one guy, and a couple of ribs on another and so on. Best and coolest of all is the fact that Seagal once again looks like he could kick most guys assess! He’s quick in this film I’m telling you. It’s that old school Seagal who can virtually stand on the spot, but a few lightening moves of the arms and hands, and big ol’ size 16 boots from no where, and the bad guys are floored. The fights are well edited and though tightly shot, they pack a punch, and the sound design is top notch. Seagal’s doing it himself which is the most important thing, because he does it better than any stunt double could. It’s Seagal fighting like Seagal would fight, no doubles doing Van Dammesque jumping spin kicks. As for the rest of the action, we have disappointingly lame car chase. Not so much down to budget, but down to a complete lack of any kinetic energy and imaginative stunt work. The shoot outs are almost Hard Target insane! Meaning entire clips are unloaded on each individual bad guy, and blood shoots out all over the damn place! In fact the blood impacts in this film are the most insane I’ve ever seen and totally illogical, but I love it. It’s the kind of super-violence Seagal used to produce. This is the guy who killed William Forsythe by ramming a corkscrew into his head, the guy who rammed his thumbs into Tommy Lee Jones’s eye sockets. Seagal also gives his best performance in a few years. He seems interested, engaged and as I said shows off his charisma here.

The director Don E Fauntleroy was previously responsible for two of Seagal’s shoddiest works. His inclusion in this was a worry, but while those first two collaborations with Big Pappa lacked any real autuership of any kind, here it’s different. Fauntleroy manages to project some vision here, some style. We’re not talking Scorsese, but for these sorts of flicks he’s serviceable. The film looks okay, above the norm in such low budget action flicks. Elsewhere the co-stars are not too bad. In particular there’s a decent cameo from Danny Trejo, while Eddie Griffin makes for a somewhat cartoony but well suited villain.

On the negative side, though the plot is very simple, it’s simplicity should have lent itself to a quicker pace of movie. The mid section suffers some lag, with too many gangster based dialogue scenes. That might not have been so bad if anything important was being said, and also the script is problematic in that the hip hop dialogue isn’t very realistic. It’s as if the writer knew only a couple of hood words and decided to repeat them endlessly. “Aaaaaaariiiiggghhht”, “Mother-f**ker” and in particular “n***er” are words that are overused to levels of almost annoyance. The relationship between Seagal and his snitch and also landlady could have been developed but instead feel needless and pasted in. Above all it would have been a few more scenes with Seagal. Elsewhere the score is pretty bad. It’s a rush job without question and one that jars against the competent direction, editing, and an in form Seagal.

Overall this isn’t exactly a great film, but in Seagal’s recent canon, it’s top notch. Importantly, the man himself is back to his old self again. If a better film can be put around him, he’ll surely be able to deliver a film to rival his best ones. As it is, Urban Justice is a welcome filler and good solid Saturday night home entertainment. Coming from one of Seagal’s harshest (though I maintain, realist) fans, that’s saying something. Seagal though, is once more an action man. ***

Above The Law
My Urban Justice Review!

First let me say obviously the film has yet to come out to DVD but as you know me I will ofcourse purchase the film as I have done with every film in my Seagal collection. Let me elaborate something before I start to review this film, great Seagal films are Above The Law, Hard To Kill, Marked For Death, Out For Justice, Under Siege, etc... those are great. To call these DTV releases great is simply untrue. But, these DTV releases are a whole new generation of Seagal films where the quality level has decreased dramatically, so we can't help to call such DTV releases like Into The Sun and Shadow Man good films. But compare them to Under Siege 2 or The Glimmer Man are they really that good? Sadly we are in that situation where we talk more about visibility of dubbles or voice dubbing then the actual excitement of the fight scenes like in the old days. But on a positive note, these last couple of films could be the last of Seagal's career, hoping for a theatrical film release as Marker is rumored to be. So we should cheris these new era of DTV releases and look for the best in them, rather then the worst.

Plot:
The plot to this film was extremely simple, sometimes his DTV release plots have been a little too complicated but this film was actually a little too simple. A little bland and a mix of cliche and really bad writing. To describe the plot this is like a mix of Marked For Death and Today You Die in one, shaken all up and drained all the juice out of it. Meaning it was an urban hip hop themed revenge flick with really no story line. Alot of Seagal's plots have been revenge themed but this one was just way too simplistic. I thought it had very lackluster writing really no out of the box thinking. So overall I did not really like the plot, I liked the concept of the revenge theme because sometimes I think it brings out the best in Seagal but the writing of this was just too simplistic, the setting seemed very cliche and dull at times, and that whole gangsta hip hop vibe obviously seemed like a white guy directed that trying to feel he had an actuall black ubran mentality way of thinking. Alot of Seagal's recent DTV release plots have been extremely simple and dull but this one wins the award. Too simple, boring at times.

Acting:
His last DTV film Flight Of Fury, Seagal had no classic one liners. Shadow Man and MFJ had a few classic ones, Attack Force... well was that even a Seagal film? However Urban Justice had many classic Seagal one liners which I loved! It was classic Seagal acting at his best for a DTV at least. It seems ever since he has been goin DTV his energy and motivation level has drecreased especially in his tone of voice, or maybe it is due to old age who knows, but this film we saw the energy which we have seen in his old classics. I loved the one liners in this film, this is what Seagal is all about, classic one liners and then he breaks a bone and kicks your ass lol. This film was packed with it, loved Seagal's character and the way he was presented in his film. This is what Steven Seagal fans want to see. His attitude and persona were back, at least in this film. As far as the other actors, they did exceptionally well especially for a DTV release. Eddie Griffin did well, played his role just how it should be. The wife of Seagal's character's son was a great actor, perhaps the best. I thought the acting from those 4-6 main characters of the film did well, I can even see most of them in A role hollywood movies as Eddie Griffin has starred in. One thing which I agree with many members whome have watched this film is the excessive unnecessary cursing. That just becomes idiotic and too cliche. Cursing has always been apart of Seagal films but the action has always backed that up, this film there was too much unnceessary cursing that really had no place in the dialoge. Hearing 5 ****s in one sentence is just stupid and in my opinion low class. I think they tried to over due the image of the whole hip hop hood theme. But overall I loved the persona Seagal protrayed, loved those classic one liners and thought the rest of the main characters did a well performance in terms of their acting.

Action:
That is what a Seagal film should have, action. Quality action. Quality! Yes it seems some of the members who are so breathtaken with these hand to hands in his past DTV releases become confused between quality and quantity in terms of Seagal's hand to hand fights. It seems we have seen many fight scenes that we have already seen in the past. Mercenary For Jusitce bathroom fight scene was great, the reason I still think Mercenary For Jusitce has the best hand to hand fights out of all his DTV releases so far is because he did something NEW, something we haven't seen before. Don't get me wrong I loved the action and fight scenes in this film they were great, there was alot which all Seagal fans wanted. But to be honest I was actually more pleased with the 3 or 4 hand to hand fights in MFJ then I was with all these tons of fight scenes in Urban Justice simply because in MFJ the fight scenes he did were something we have not scene before. But in defense, I thought Urban Jusitce had some great hand to hand fights. It still amazes me how fast Seagal can move his hands, that was impressive. Alot of Aikido finger locks, wrist locks, neck breaks, and arm breaks, all we want and expect to see in any Steven Seagal film. This film certainly was pleasing, the car chase was a car chase, nothing special or nothing we haven't seen before. Obviously due to the budget there was not that many explosions, I thought that would have brought a little more excitement to the film and thought it would have made the film a little more interesting. The hand to hand fight scenes from Seagal were outstanding but I felt that was the only exciting part of the movie. So very pleased with the fight scenes, thought it could have used a little more action in terms of excitement maybe a little more gun shoot outs or explosions, but overall awesome fight scenes that was classic Seagal.

Appearence:
I miss his poney tail. The last film we saw Seagal in a poney tail was Shadow Man then before that was Submerged, I love seeing Seagal in a poney tail that is his trademark. So I miss the poneytail and hope it comes back. Seagal looked good, nothing we haven't seeen before in his aging body. He looked good, plain and simple. I like Seagal the best in terms of appearence when he has his poney tail and leather jacket on, but his wardrobe was very plain in this film. Judging from the pics we have seen from Marker, it looks like the production has put alot of make up on his face hiding his aging wrinkles, but here they obviously made the lighting dark so the audience wouldn't zoom in on his aging face or weight gain. But Seagal looked ok, still in the same shape, nothing new.

Dubbing:
I spotted just one small line dubbed but that is me, I was looking for it lol. Other then that I noticed no dubbing which is the way it should be. Very pleasing after having Flight Of Fury, Attack Force and even some parts of Shadow Man dubbed, finally a DTV without any dubbing, I was very pleased with that. A big step in the right direction for Seagal.

Doubles:
Absolutely no doubles were used for Seagal in this film which was great. No doubles were used in his fighting as far as I can see which is very pleasing once again. Only one short little stand in when he is at the police department, they used a double from the back of the hair but that was no big deal. Again it is great to see we can't see these visible doubles, this actually is one of the best jobs of seeing no doubles. Very happy with that.

Production:
For some reason even though his previous DTV releases Attack Force and Flight Of Fury weren't as good as this film I feel the production was better. This film again was just way too plain and simple, I think that made it boring at times. I didn't feel the production put anything exciting in the film that made the audience feel thrilled. It is a good thing they didn't use any CGI for the fights but again I wanted to see more explosions and stuff like that. Just felt very bland and I think that is what dried the film a little.

Conclusion:
In conclusion I think this clearly one of his best DTV releases since Into The Sun, I feel Into The Sun is the his best DTV release, but Urban Justice is closely behind. I loved this film, considering it was a DTV release it did have its corny and cliche moments but hey what is to be expected. It seems Seagal put alot more effort into this film with no dubbing, doubles, and great hand to hand fights. I loved the classic one liners from Seagal and it really made me feel that excitement as a fan. The one thing I didn't like was the plainess of the film, for some reason the film felt a little dry, don't know if it was the simplicity of the story line, the setting, or what, it just felt a little dry at times with this cliche ghetto vibe. Needless to say this was a huge step forward for Steven Seagal. This is one of his best DTV releases, awesome fights, and just very pleasing. So much better then Flight Of Fury and Attack Force. I liked the film as a whole better then Mercenary For Justice, and because of the awesome fight scenes I liked this film better then Shadow Man even though I feel Shadow Man was much more exciting in terms of story line and setting. This is easily one of my favorite DTV releases and a film I can watch more then once unlike Submerged, Attack Force, and films like that. Very pleased with this film. This is a huge step forward and I feel Seagal is putting the effort as he should for his age. I feel Marker will be even better then this film and I feel he will end on a good note. Loved this movie I am going to watch it again with my friends tonight. So that being said, I give this film a very strong
3.5 out of 5 stars.

i think its better than into the sun and on par with belly of the beast...also i agree about the writing it sounded outdated TBH and i think the exit wounds script was more hip and that was made in 2001.

dont get me wrong into the sun looked more like a big budget film than urban justice and i think into the sun could have cone theatrical easy(and if franchise had not gone tits up would have done)...but i just found into the sun a bit slow going and although it had a fantastic ending it dragged for long spells in the middle

Urban justice looks like a DTV, but it's still a step forward and i'm sure Steven knows that he has to make better movies than the last ones.
