i was wondering who taught Steven Seagal Aikido. If anyone knows, please post it here.

A few folks taught him, but certainly not O'Sensei; he was dead by the time Seagal went to Japan. However, most of his instructors, if not all, were taught by O'Sensei (i.e., Tohei, etc...), so I gues you can say he learned from O'Sensei through someone else.

(But I can say that as well, so it's not uncommon......)

Ad_adrian do you have proof for this statement? I have wondered about these things lately. Some people say O-sensei was dead before Steven sat his foot in Japan. Some say he did. I would like for this place to be a source of true facts about Steven (not creator and distributor of myths and non-facts). So I for one would be happy to see someone with first hand info stating that they e.g. saw Steven Seagal in Japan before the death of O-sensei. That would be great.

Must we get into another debate about Seagal's past ? There is absolutely no proof whatsoever that Seagal went to Japan prior to '74, other than Seagal having 'hinted' at it, much like he has hinted about other stupid little things about his past. People in the aikido 'leadership' or the 'higher-ups' so to speak at the time who are still around have all said Seagal went to Japan in '74, as does Seagal's ex-wife.

Additionally, O'Sensei was not in the habit of giving 'lectures' to the public.

But let's just assume he did see O'Sensei in Japan at one of these 'lectures'; I wonder how Seagal would have understood O'Sesnei since O'Sensei spoke Japanese, and Seagal didn't learn Japanese until he moved and lived there. He was not fluent before he moved to Japan.

i am very much caught up in the world of aikido,
and as i can not be sure...as i was not there to see steven him self
he has said it...people who know him have said it....
there is a few people on
aikiweb.com who know steven personally and know he has (well so he says) steven has seen o sensei.
he even said it on the interview on this very forum....
i quote this from seagal him self " i found aikido and read some of o-sensei's speeches and saw him"
so people argue it saying wait a minute when seagal moved to japan sensei was already dead (why do so many people doubt seagal)
well he also explains that in the very same interview
"i was in and out of japan as a youth"

and if anyone doubts the interview...i know the person "only through the web" as he is in america and he is connected to seagal's dojo him self...who intervied seagal him self.

And your refering to Reynosa Sensei I am assuming ad. He would be the one with the knowledge since he was with Seagal since 1983!!! Reynosa is a GREAT man with MUCH knowledge.

Ad-adrian, I'm not saying that I don't believe Steven Seagals own word from that interveiw. I'm just saying that it would be nice if this site would have a source (like another well known aikidoka) who stated that, yes they saw Seagal in Japan before O-sensei died. Since this is the #1 fan-site for SS, it would be good if anyone who had doubts could come here and find out the truth (with sources), and not just vague myths.

What you posted just confirmed what I said..... Seagal was the only one who said he traveled to Japan as a youth. However, everyone else who saw him (wife, instructors, etc....) say otherwise - that he arrived in '74.

As I said before but you ignored, even if he did go to Japan as a youth and saw / read O'Sensei, it would have been difficult to understand O'Sensei as Seagal did not speak Japanese and O'Sensei did not speek English.

Today, surviving O'Sensei's students say that they have had trouble understanding what O'Sensei DID say at this PRIVATE lectures to his own students - SO, it would seem very unlikely that a non-Japanese speaking american child was let into private lectures by a Japanese speaking man whose own adult senior students had trouble understanding.

Finally, now Seagal I am sure has read O'Sensei's writings - I have done so as well and many if not all of the people who practice aikido has read O'Sensei; and I am sure he 'saw' O'Sensei - I have seen him myself in videos, but this does not mean I saw him in person and met him.

WHO DELETED MY 1ST POINT ?

I ASKED THE PERSON TO WRITE IN A MANNER SO IT WOULD BE EASY TO READ. I DO NOT APPRECIATE THE DELETION. CLEAR WRITING IS ESSENTIAL AND TO DELETE THIS REQUEST BECAUSE IT MAY HURT SOMEONES FEELINGS IS A LITLE RIDICULOUS.

MY POINT AGAIN TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER IS TO USE PUNCTUATION SO PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO READ YOUR POST.

AND IF ANYONE DELETES THIS POST, I WILL KICK YOUR ASS. TO THE PERSON WHO DELETED IT, PLEASE POST YOUR NAME AND NOT HIDE, AND NEXT TIME YOU FEEL YOU NEED TO TINKER WITH PEOPLE'S POSTS, AT LEAST SAY SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Now why did you delete my post asking why my point was deleted, goddamn it !!!!!!!!!!!! Quit acting like a goddamn dictator ! This is not some child playground where people have to hide other peoples writings 'cuz they'll go home crying to mommy.

I say again TO ANYONE - write complete sentences with punctuation so we can understand ! How could asking them to write correctly so that we may be able to read it be a personal attack !? You want to encourage bad writing ?

You are unbelievable - deleting as a write. Taking your role a little too far.

Again - the rules:
"...You warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws."

My point/post was none of the above (other than the kidding I'll kick you ass comment).

Pay attention to the rules.

I guess you could say O'Sensei has been all of our teacher (Aikido people that is). What I am refering to is that he is the founder of Aikido and therfore gave his vision to the world, so in escence, he would be my teacher as well as Seagals or any Aikidoka. There is only one Aikido, and that is O'Senseis Aikido. Of course I am being completely metophoric about this!
