What can we expect from Out Of Reach?

Hi all!

I was thinking the other night will Out Of Reach really get a theatrical release, what it has to do to be able to get one & what others thoughts are on Seagal's latest action flick. Here I take a look at some of the positive & negative aspects of the film and see exactly what this new Seagal flick might have to offer. The movie is set for a May or September?! release in the US but I really can't see this happening.?The film looks like it will go DTV.

The main star
Seagal! What else do you need? After some critics, and fans alike expressing that his last film Belly Of The Beast was a step in the right direction,it certainly bodes well for the upcoming Out Of Reach.Although let's hope we get more back-to -basics Akido from the master in this film.

Supporting actors
I'm guessing the main big pull, besides Seagal,is Matt Shultz? He's been known for his supporting bad guy roles in such films as Blade 2,The Transporter & Torque, but just how popular is he?I'm guessing he must be quite popular(at least if his fan clubs are anything to go by). However, would people pay money just to see him?Maybe.Maybe not.I wasn't aware of him being in that many films at all until I saw both his perfomances in both Blade 2 & The Transporter,& I have to say I was impressed with his performance;he's certainly a talented actor.

As for the rest of the cast,it seems to be split up between a British & Polish cast.UK actor Robbie G(who plays a character called Morton-perhaps best known in the UK for his stint on UK comedy show 'Desmonds'-which is like a UK version of The Cosby show in many ways)whose last two films were the cult gangster Guy Ritchie film 'Snatch' & the hit horror/actioner 'Underworld'.Be sure to watch this guy in the future-looks like he has a rosey Hollywood future ahead of him.
Other actors in the film?I haven't got a clue.Perhaps some of you can shed some light on Nick Brimble? Not sure if he is from the UK or America. And I guess we're all lost when it comes to the Polish cast LOL.

The director
I don't know about anyone else but this director is a new name on me.Following up a film by Ting is no easy task & will no doubt be judged against this,Seagal's best film for a while(IMHO).Someone commented that the sets looked like they were left-overs from The Foreigner & Out For A Kill!I hope this doesn't turn out to be the case.Either way,we will not be able to comment any further until we have seen the trailer. My hopes are high,as they are for any new Seagal flick, and here's hoping the director has done a good job.

The premise
Billy Ray Lancing, a former covert agent turned survivalist, discovers that the foster program he is using to help a young girl is actually a human trafficking network. Lancing heads overseas to find the girl and shut down the operation.

Film company:This film is a Sony Screen Gems/Franchise production-the same company behind Half Past Dead.Remember when they promoted Half Past Dead so well(yeah right!!!)?.They need to learn from the mistakes of Half Past Dead & market & promote Out Of Reach really well if they are going to have any kind of success(no matter how small). It is rumored that Miramax will distribute the film outside of the US.Considering that Miramax haven't exactly done a good job in the past(they've slept on many films by the likes of Wesley Snipes etc) with previous other action flicks ,I will not be holding my breath.Time will tell.Having said that I think that information was wrong.

Outlook:I can't see this film having wires!Good thing! And will hopefully see a raw,back-to-basics akido fighting Seagal:).Fans will rejoice everywhere!I guess it's going to HAVE to HAVE its fare share of FIGHT/ACTION scenes to get a good buzz.I suppose this matters more to the guys than the girls?Or would that be sexist?Sorry in advance :).
I wonder how involved they have done Seagal's releationship with Irena, the foster girl he is supporting?Be good to see them get lots of screen time together. But something tells me they won't(esp. if she is kidnapped for the entire movie!).
My other problem with this film is that the other 70% of the cast is Polish(not that I have anything agaisnt the Polish you understand!).If it's one thing that would stop Out Of Reach from getting a theatrical release it has got to be this.Perhaps more star power would've been a turning point?Just a thought.

When will the trailer be out?No idea!Hopefully very soon.

Release date for Out Of Reach?May & September(?!)are the only dates to have been mentioned thus far.

Peace,
Leon

Where do you find some of the information that you have used above (like release dates). Because of this forum I am way excited for this film and expect it to at least surpass OFAK and TF. If it does that then I'd be happy, not that those two were awful, probably just my least favorite. I'm not going to try and assume it will be better than some of his other latest. I figure the commercial we saw is somebody getting Seagal out there for people to see before his next movie. Regardless as to whether or not it is theatrical if it meets some of the things drawn up above and beats the earlier mentioned films than I think this will be great (though I'm not thrilled with the name Billy Ray (Billy Ray Cyrus soundalike) he will be acting under).

I think Out of Reach was originally supposed to be released in May, but has now been pushed back to September, at least in the US (I don't know what that means for Canadian release, which is usually about a month after the US release).

No chance Out of Reach is going to be a theatrical release in North America, because it's ONLY got Steven Seagal in it as a recognizable actor (to North Americans), and that simply isn't enough to bring in an audience (an audience other than hard-core Steven Seagal fans, that is) which isn't enough to make even a break-even amount on a theatrical release, alas, pity 'tis, 'tis true.

I'm doubtful Into the Sun will be a North American theatrical release, for the same reason.

This was quite excellent, Leon. Very well written! I really enjoyed the synopsis and appreciate the summary. I always tell everyone you're the go-to man when it comes to Steven's upcoming releases. ;) Thanks for taking all that time to summarize the facts for us and sharing your thoughts. :) With bits of info scattered all over, it's nice to see them all pulled together in one post.

I guess my only thought is that I'll keep an open mind and hope for the best. :) Not really much more to say. :D

Except I was pretty happy with Belly of the Beast, so I'm more optimistic than I was after Out for a Kill.
And I've still not seen a Steven Seagal movie on the big screen!

Looks like Van Damme's movie is what Out for a Kill should have been, and wasn't. It will be interesting to see if there's any improvement on the dialogue, since there wasn't much in this clip.

You may change your mind when you see the cost of popcorn here! Almost as much as the price of admission. :D

Not bad, not bad at all - good work!

Great stuff Justice.

Thanks for the link Reservoir Dog. The thing with most VanDamme movies I found was that the best shots are put into the promotional videos ... it's kind of like watching a commercial for an upcoming comedy, where the commercial shows you all the funniest things in the movie, and when you actually see it, it's not funny anymore as you've seen the commercial too many times. I like Van Damme's work (except for the latest - not including 'In Hell' which I loved), and the trailer is promising. However, it sort of reminds me of "Hard To Kill" ... his family is killed in an execution-style, and now VanDamme's character survives and goes after the Chinese Triads (also reminds me of OFAK - going after a Chinese mafia - killing all, one by one ... or three at a time - whatever). The good thing is that it looked like the production company picked a better CGI group this time, unlike in 'Derailed' which ruined the movie's appearence. VanDamme's movie doesn't look like it will bring in much $$$ if it goes to theatres, but I'd still like to watch it on a gigantic screen (although my DLP would also do).

I'm always excited for Steven Seagal's upcoming movies. It doesn't matter whether they are STV or STT (Straight To Theatres ... LOL) ... how about those new Cadillacs - CTS, STS, SRX, XLR - LOL that can get confusing to those who don't follow the auto market :=)

Good info guys ... now time for me to study (unless there are a few more threads I feel like replying to).
