News:
Toyota is to release a hybrid Camry for the second half of 2006 as a 2007 model using the same components as the '07 hybrid Nissan Altima. Toyota's luxury brand, Lexus, will release the next generation LS in a stretched, LSS, version for 2009. It will feature the industry's first EIGHT speed automatic transmission to up Mercedes-Benz's current industry-high seven speeder available in various of their V6 and V8 models.
The ultimate Maybach - Exetero (a coupe version that is slightly shorter than Maybach 57).
This one dates back to 1938, when Fulda commissioned Maybach to build a streamlined coupe to conduct 120mph+ tire tests. Recently, Fulda has done it again, and the Exetero is to test 315/25ZR23 Fuldas (that is 23" tires with a width of 315mm which is 12.4" OVER A FOOT WIDE tire!!) at speeds in excess of 350km/h (220mph). It will achieve such feat via its 5.9L twin-turbo V12 that outputs 700hp and at least 738lb/ft of torque. The purpose of the car is not as a production model but as a test vehicle. However, once even a handful customer inquiries turn up, the Exetero could see the light of day on the Maybach's very exclusive (also read as VERY expensive) model line.
In other news (more closely affecting North America): GM's plans for a rear-drive Buick Velite sedan, convertible, or anything else are officially dead. The murder also affects any rear-drive Chevy coupe, Camaro, Chevelle, or otherwise. The plug on the new Zeta platform was pulled. According to GM, Holden's Zeta rear-drive platforms aren't considered refined enough for rear-drive Buicks and Chevys to compete with the Mercedes-based Chrysler and Dodge models, and Cadillac's Sigma platform is too expensive to be used for GM's mainstream brands. Cadillac's small-block-based V10 has been dropped, and so has Ford's Hurricane 6.2L V8. The only rear-drive program spared is the upcoming '08 GTO (a Mustang lool-a-like), and Saturn continues to move upmarket as a "warm-and-fuzzy" Toyota.
Ferrari Superamerica (see photos below) is still the world's fastest convertible (200mph).
