Could my luck be changing?

Okay, so no work since last week, and nothing on the horizon until the spring (federal election), but...

Got a call today from the apartment building where my name's been on the waiting list for over a year. It's in the area I've been lusting to live in, downtown, close to where most of Exit Wounds was shot, close to all the theatres and cinemas, close to public transportation, close to work opportunities.

They have a unit available. I'm going down tomorrow at 3 p.m. to look at it. Oh, I so hope it's a unit overlooking the Esplanade, with a balcony! (most of the units have balconies).

Where I'm going to find the money to move, I don't know. But find it I must and will!

Fingers crossed!

Best of luck to you, TD! We've been on the waiting list for a couple of places, too. Hope that it's just what you want, and that you get it!

I sure hope so, TD! You certainly deserve it! Is this the building where I seem to remember you said in a recent post that you were going to stare at the building and send some wishful thoughts for someone to move (or something like that)? Anyway, I'm sure your financial sitution will work itself out. After all, we know how well you function under pressure after all you went through with that recent awards banquet, right? Good luck!!!!!

Thanks, everyone!

Yes, it's THAT building, in fact, I was just there this past Saturday beaming thoughts - I guess it worked, eh?

Apparently the apartment's in really bad condition, they're going to need to do a lot of work to it to get it into "move-in" condition, so I might be able to get away with not having to pay rent to two apartments for the same month.

However, my apartment's in pretty bad condition, as well, so I may not get my deposit back (which I need to cover some of the rent, at least until work picks up).

Anyhow, fingers crossed that it'll be okay! Oh, I am so anxious to get out of here, you have no idea.

Well, the drug dealers do hang out in the park after dark, but if you don't rat them out, they won't bother you. Much.

(Note to self: make sure I go for my daily walk BEFORE dark.)

Besides, this apartment puts me within range of the Aikido dojo over on Broadview Ave., so they just better watch out!

Good Luck, TD...At least you have a job, I doubt you could rent without one! Hope you get what you desire!

Thanks, all! Just 15 more hours before I get a look at the apartment...

The trouble is, I always seem to make the wrong decision, and now I'm starting to second guess myself. Partly it's the money - with no work in hand right at this moment, is it the right time to move, should I save my money and wait until another comes up (even though it could be years), should I just grab this one and hope for the best....

Though even when I do make a wrong decision, I do manage to make it work, somehow.

-TD, nervous wreck and full of self-doubt

Perhaps the self-doubt is just because you're so excited, but you're scared of what is finally happening?

Could be - although I do have a long history of making spectacularly bad decisions because I want something so badly that I don't consider all of the consquences - like in this instance, moving without having any work scheduled for the next couple of months.

The biggest issue in this instance is that if I move from where I am right now, I lose housing subsidy, which means if I have a low income month in the new place, I still have to cough up the full rent for the month, and at the moment, I have no reserves at all.

Arrrgggghhhh.... I don't know what to do.

They offered me a bachelor, which, size-wise, is about the same as the one-bedroom apartment I have now. (It's also got a little balcony, which would be lovely in the summer time, since it faces west, and so will get the last light of day, and I can have planters and window boxes and suchlike gardeny kinds of things.)

Mind you, it was hard to visualise the place with my stuff in it, because of the apartment's bad condition - they had to evict the previous tenant and the place is in an absolutely awful state, with all of the previous tenant's furniture in it, the stench of someone with poor personal hygiene as well as cat pee, not to mention the walls in this hideous diarrhea-coloured paint, which made the place look even smaller. I won't describe the colour of the kitchen cabinets other than to say that I've looked after a few infants in my time and the colour of the cabinets is what infants produce after eating strained peas....

Icky colours aside, though (they are going to paint and clean and fix the place, obviously, before I move in), the problem that I'm facing is financial insecurity. I'd need to book at least six weeks of work beginning the first of November to ensure I have enough money to cover all of my expenses to the end of January. And there's absolutely nothing like that on the horizon.

I have until Thursday to say yea or nay.

I just don't know what to do....

Doesn't sound that bad of a place if they're going to fix it up as you say...flipping a coin is always good :)

You know what kind of situation you have now-soooo

Okay, TD. I'm not sure if you're just thinking out loud (which often does help), but I'm going to give you my honest opinion as a friend trying to be objective.

I don't think you should take this apartment.

I understand that you've waited for a long time, but from everything you've said I don't think this is the right time or place for you.

1. Financial. Without any future employment prospects lined up until early next year, where is this money going to come from? Don't forget, Christmas is coming, and while you may not have a lot of people to buy for or plan to spend much, you know you will probably spend more than you should (don't we all). And the fact that you'll lose your housing subsidy is a big factor. What if you can't make the rent one month? You could possibly end up with no apartment, which would definitely be worse than where you're living now.

2. The possibility that you might not get your deposit back from your present place means probably using up all your reserves just to put the downpayment on the new place. You don't want to end up with nothing at all to fall back on.

3. It's still a bachelor apartment, and although you're gaining a balcony, it doesn't sound like you're gaining much else, although I do understand the neighborhood and location are better.

4. The apartment you want is in terrible condition. If they don't rip up the whole carpet (which they might not due to expense) and just shampoo it, that cat urine odor will NEVER come out. Combined with the other smells you mentioned, this place may take a very long time to actually be fit to live in. It may look okay, but.......

I really believe that with all these factors, it's just not meant to be at this time. And because of that, I believe that something much better, at the appropriate time and place, is waiting for you and it's meant to be that you're not committed to this other place when that opportunity arises.

Make a decision either way now. Don't wait until the deadline because you'll drive yourself crazy. Remember, indecision is worse than a bad decision. Whichever way you go, TD, I wish you lots of luck!!!

Serena.

Thanks, Serena. Yes, I've pretty much decided against accepting the apartment, for all the reasons you cited. The only way I could make this place work, anyhow, is if I bought all new furniture, since the hodge-podge of bits and pieces that I have simply wouldn't accommodate either my stuff or the space to put it in.

-TD, bummed
