Exit Wounds the book

Has anybody read Exit Wounds the book (by John Westermann)? I read it a couple months ago but I did not like it very much. It was nothing like the movie, which would have been ok if it was still well-written and entertaining, which it wasn't. I don't mean to be negative, I just thought Westermann's writing style was too simple and the book didn't really have a message. Not all books need a message, but I thought that since that character development and story and action were a bit thin, an underlying message would have been nice. Anybody else who has read this book, I would like to know what you thought about it.

I did read the book & I agree that it wasn't like the movie. They couldn't have left it like the movie because that wouldn't have been Seagals type of character.

I own a copy of Exit Wounds and The Honor Farm (the sequel) and have read both of them. Exit Wounds is a good book, but it was ludicrous to suggest that the film was based on the book. Literally, the only similarity the film had to the book was the name Orin Boyd and the "cat wasn't dead" line.

Smile dammit!
That line about the cat was well executed by Seagal. Quite amusing. It's a shame that the fight with Jai White was just swords and hardly any fighting.

Exit Wounds the book is what is referred to as "men's fiction". It was hard reading it, not for that reason, but because it did wander a bit from the point; I thought (putting on my editorial hat) it could easily have been cut by a third and it would have been a better book. I haven't read the sequel (can't find a copy in the second hand bookstore, and that's all my budget can run to these days), but I did think the character of Orin Boyd in the book was interesting. I agree that it wasn't the usual type of character that Steven would play on the screen; but he did manage to capture the essence of the character without having to resort to the cliche of the boozing cop to do it.

You're so right. I'm glad that the "cat wasn't dead" line appeared in both the movie and the book, as it was the best line both had to offer (followed closely by the movie's "I didn't vote for him").

What did you think of The Honor Farm? Is it worth reading?

"Exit Wounds" was written by John Westermann.
He's also a member of this board and the old board

mikek7316 (amusing 'member' line, by the way) - The Honor Farm is good and follows on nicely from Exit Wounds. After he chins a scumbag senator, Orin Boyd finds himself doing time in a luxurious 'prison' for cops who have gone wrong. While there he has to investigate the apparent suicide of a police chief's son and finds himself embroiled in something far deeper. It's good and I recommend it.

TDWoj - that's kinda sad that your budget can't stretch to a second hand copy. You need a loan?! :D Check this out - I found 63 new and used copies on Amazon - the first copy is on sale for $0.20(!) - does your budget stretch that far?!

John Westermann rules. Anyone who has spoke to him on the old site message board will tell you that. In fact - he said I could send him my copies of Exit Wounds and The Honor Farm for him to autograph and send back to me, but I never got round to it.

Take it easy.

Pitiful, ain't it? It's not the cost of the book, it's the delivery charge! :)

<-TD, making strange snarly noise in back of throat>

This end-of-July/August slump gets me every year, and no matter what I do to prevent, I always come up short of cash. And then I get flooded with work in September. It never fails.

I found a copy of Exit Wounds in my local second hand book store, and got it for practically nothing since I traded in a few tomes gleaned from my already full-to-overflowing shelves (I sometimes forget I've bought a book and end up buying a dupe, but I think that well's pretty much run dry). I'm sure if I found the one, I'll eventually find the other.

The Honor Farm sounds pretty good. I liked the character of Orin Boyd in Exit Wounds, although from time to time I just wanted to strangle him. I wonder if John Westermann is planning to write a third with Orin Boyd? (Or does something bad happen to Orin in The Honor Farm?)

I thought the Honor Farm was a great read. I liked it better than Exit Wounds. As many have said it was so different from the movie.

If you see these books you should give them a read, they are really good.
