Machete - Reviews

Excerpt:

Steven Seagal in a Robert De Niro-starring movie? What?? Only in the wildest, most drug-induced delirious dreams of the biggest (and most unrealistically loyal) Seagal fans could anybody even imagine such a thing. Yet here it is. The, erm, big guy is back after a 10 year hiatus from the Big Screen (a decade of making really bad DTV movies – over 20 of them – only about 5 of which are even watchable) and, through a long-term close friendship with the lead actor, Danny Trejo (who has popped up in a couple of Seagal’s movies), managed to get quite a significant part in this film. Sure, his screen-time barely hits double-figures, but he is both unexpectedly ruthless as the villain Torres (surprisingly in shape, and still capable of some nifty moves with a sword) and ridiculously over-the-top – his final confrontation with Machete one of the most (hopefully intentionally) hilarious, laugh-out-loud moments in the film. Seriously, Seagal should have agreed to do bad guy roles long ago, back when Jackie Chan offered him one of the Rush Hour roles, and he does well here, clearly not taking himself seriously even if he plays it seriously.

“I could kill you very easily right now, but I know that you'd be waiting for me in hell.”

fun

Considering it was the debut for Danny Trejo as the star character amongst a cast of stars, I'd say it was pretty successful. Personally speaking, there was alot of entertainment value in there. I found it absolutely hilarious at times (humour-wise). Seagal's initial apperance in the movie, although powerful, was not very convincing. However, as the movie progressed, his role seemed to shine more as his importance to the storyline was revealed more and more. The final duel was somewhat impressive (if only Lyoto Machida could've made a cameo appearance... ;-). The most surprising thing about it all was the lack of Seagal's name in most of the mainstream advertising of this movie around here. Because he had such an important role and did a good job with his performance, it doesn't make sense why his presence would not be marketed more.

I cried watching the end

Oh guys, the end is kind of painful for a Seagal fan...

Steven killing himself?? No way...

Oh guys...I cried the first time I saw the movie in the theather, and I suffer a lot watching the dvd...

Seagal is pretty good and solid doing the bad guy, but I don´t want Steven dies in that way...

yep! Pretty painful to me.

P.S: I think I´m gonna feel a lot of pain the day Seagal dies...for my age is logical that Steven & Sly die first than myself or many of us...

But...That will gonna hurt...That´s gonna be really painful to me.

LJ, you're such a Bambino LOL. But I agree, I didn't care for seeing Seagal lose the sword fight to Trejo. But it was new and interesting scenario to Seagal challenge himself as a bad guy in that film, and to portray a death scene too

I saw Machete in the cinema in November and it was the first and probably also the last time me seeing Steven in a theatrically released movie.

I really liked the film, it was obviously intended to look as a B-movie, but it had an A-production and awesome cast. The plot was really simple but extremely entertaining and crazy as well. Danny Trejo was tough a lot and Seagal with De Niro were excellent bad guys. I have to also say that Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez looked very sexy in the film:).

For me 90%, but I am sure that for some viewers Machete may be to much crazy. :)))))

seagal as bad guy - not so new

Didn't Seagal have a role of a so-called "bad guy" in Clementine? Just sayin'...

I'm sure this site has a clip of his appearance in that film. Try searching beyond just the rental places...

I've seen the short clip of this film already on this website.

But if you ever locate Steven Seagal's movie "Clementine" shown in it's entirety at some other website, let me know Yudie?

No...not a 'bad guy'...Seagal was the ongoing reigning champ....
If I remember correctly Clementine was a kind of cheaply made 'Asian Rocky'(with the mosy annoying child in movie history)...where the whole movie is about the guy training and his personal life leading up to a chance at the championship title...meaning he would have to defeat Seagal ...
Seagal even visites the guy in the hospital at the end and gives him the belt....
this surely would not be in character with a 'bad guy'.
sent you a PM Don

true - not really a typical 'bad' guy

He was portrayed as the guy to beat, though. Typically that means the anti-hero of the plot. The ending just goes to show you that even "bad" guys can have a change of heart... That's all I'm saying.

And, Don, do you know me?
