This sounds like quite a goal, littledragon! And from the little I know of your experience and expertise, plus knowing the enthusiasm you have, it certainly sounds as though it's an attainable one, as well.

I do hope, though, that your plans include general studies to help prepare for a different career path, should the need arise. A goal such as this, based almost entirely on your physical wellbeing, could easily be interrupted by a single injury. Sorry if this sounds negative, but it is a very real possibility that should not be ignored. I only say this as I care about you and your future.

I do wish you success in achieving your goals, littledragon. I really do have faith in you! :)

Balance . . .

Hi Little Dragon,

I admire your enthusiasm and being goal oriented. Seldom do you see goal orientation in today's world. As an old martial artist who still trains and teaches, I always admonish my students to maintain a balance within their lives--have goals and dreams outside of the martial arts. I would forward to you that same advise.

As you probably already know, the martial arts is rife with politics and . . . no other way to say it . . . corruption. This is caused, in my opinion, because many martial artists have very narrow self concepts. They define themselves as ONLY martial artists. Then, the martial arts has to shoulder the burden of a . . . life. So, because the martial arts is their only means to identify themselves, they will simply do anything to make that identity an outwardly powerful and successful one.

So, you find guys and gals buying rank--making themselves phony linneages and martial histories. They do this because they have painted themselves into a self-concept corner.

My teacher is a 9th Dan in Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate--one of the true American pioneers. He began his Karate training in Okinawa in 1956. He is 71 years old and still trains and teaches every day. While his martial achievements are incredible (member of the 1964 U.S. Olympic Judo team as heavyweight alternate amongst many Marine and All Services championships), he maintains so many outside interests and pursuits it is crazy. He has been learning to play the trumpet and saxaphone and has started to cultivate bonsai trees. He gardens and at 71, still loves to ride his Goldwing motorcycle cross country. He is an avid student of Jazz and is learning to speak Japanese. He is active in the community, sitting on the boards of many social services organizations for kids. In short, his life is VERY much larger than the martial arts and his self concept is defined by a myriad of interests and skills.

Balance. One achieves when there is balance. Of course, that does not count in watching Steven Seagal movies :) where one can be WAY out of balance and be a fanatic and that's okay :)

Just my ni yen.

Best Regards,
Gary Gabelhouse
