The idea is to contemplate WHY the terrorists (and in fact so many in the Middle East also who are not terrorists at all) hate the US, and Britain. It isn't as simple as "hunting them down" because that hatred has spread over the entire globe. What it takes is for us to step outside ourselves for a moment and look at others and try to understand how and why they are thinking what they do. It is a very complex set of circumstances, nothing simple about it. What I'm talking about is pre-emtive aggression with verbal overtones of self-righteousness coming from the Bush admin. The average joe on the streets in the US has no real idea how the average joe in the middle east is feeling. The media presents sensationalism because it sells and that's what most people enjoy hearing - think about it next time you watch the evening news - it is full of "news" about film stars, about celebraties, about beheadings and murder and killing and war. There is no mention about the human element, about feelings and motivations behind what people do, except for the occasional shallow expose.
There is no hope for the terrorists - they are lost in their hell which they think is heaven and no amount of talk will retrieve their humanity. However, there IS hope for the average person, here and abroad, to bridge the gap between us all and help us understand our innate goodness and brother/sisterhood. It is the unity between us that needs to be fostered and focused on - this aspect alone will help to prevent those who are on the brink of crazy hatred to step back and take a longer look. It is diplomacy at its utmost function and it is needed now.
The terror will not end until those of us who are not subject to its craziness - hatred - stand up not only for "ourselves" but for all decent human beings.
Even then, it is said that the only One to stop it is Jesus Himself because he is the only Prophet "not born of man" and who can return. Yet even He will be scorned by those who harbor hatred of goodness. There are and will be those who will heed His message - as for those who do not, they will continue to self-destruct.
What is happening in the world today is bigger than anything we have dealt with in the past - it is not "ordinary" war. It will take all the Heart we can muster to fight this battle, for it will not only be fought upon the battlefields of the world but in the Hearts of every human being on the planet. The battle does not belong to one country or one religion or one philosphy or one political leaning - it belongs to us all. The enemy is within each of us as separation, difference, envy, greed, divisions, hatred, and malice. The only weapons against such things are love, compassion, tolerance, forebearance and treating all lives as our own; these belong to everyone and can be used by everyone no matter what religion or belief they have.
The "axis of evil" is within our own hearts and the battle must be fought within our own hearts. Until we focus within, the outward battles could prove fruitless.
The Power comes from Within.
